Food Lion History

food lion 3

Food Lion was founded in 1957 by Wilson Smith and Ralph and Brown Ketner.  The first store was called Food Town and it was located in Salisbury, North Carolina, where the headquarters still resides today.

The company name was changed to Food Lion in the early 1980s after the chain was acquired by Belgian grocer Delhaize.

The chain grew very quickly during the 80s and 90s, opening over 100 stores per year for much of that period.

In 1993, the company agreed to pay $16 million in damages after violating federal laws regarding overtime pay.

In 1994, the company closed 47 stores.  This was the first of many major store closings. food lion 1

Beginning in 2014, the company began remodeling 76 of their stores in the greater Wilmington and Greenville North Carolina areas. In 2015, plans were announced for remodeling of its 162 locations in the Raleigh, North Carolina market.

Although the company spent seven years attempting to establish a presence in Bangkok, Thailand, they were ultimately unsuccessful.  The stores were operated locally by Bel-Thai Supermarket Co,  and in 2004, Food Lion withdrew from the country, selling all branches to Tops Supermarkets.

In June of 2015, it was announced that Food Lion’s parent company, the Delhaize Group, and Ahold would merge into one company, Ahold Delhaize. This merger was completed in July 2016.  Food lion 2

Today, Food Lion is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize.  The company operates over 1100 stores in Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Forest City, NC
This store is so small and old and has stale cigarette and musty smell throughout the store and needs to be replaced! I drive across town to go to the Rutherfordton store that is larger, more selections and CLEAN.
Our town has been revitalizing and a new store would help add to the look!

John Sewinski allowed another customer to stay in the food lion store in Middletown de after they called me a b*tch. He asked me to leave the store but allowed the other customer to stay in the store and discuss the matter further with other customers and staff members

Your Manager’s in ALL of the Food Lion stores in Salisbury, NC show favoritism! THIS IS NOT OK!!! You shouldn’t have to feel like you’re slaving doing extra work on your own because your manager wants you to do it instead of their favorites. You shouldn’t have to feel bad vibes as soon as you walk in to work from other co-worker’s. You shouldn’t have to always keep looking over your shoulders. Somebody from the outside needs to come in to every one of the stores here and do a well check on these childish so called “humans”. You shouldn’t get to treat people any kind of way because you’ve been at the company for so long. I would’ve loved working here if it wasn’t for one of my customers telling me that they overheard the managers talking about myself and other employee’s, OH AND LET’S NOT FORGET, the nasty attitudes and favoritism shown towards others from people I’m supposed to be able to go to if I have a problem. All the office people/CSSM’s do is run from customers, sit in the office and talk down on people. Do better. People in higher positions most definitely need to stand up for their companies and enforce the rule to STOP FAVORITISM/DISCRIMINATION IN ALL WORKPLACES!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Food Lion, for remodeling the 5th St. store in Charlottesville. It looks great! I’ve been a customer for 5 years and plan to continue shopping there; the remodel makes it so much more pleasant.

We shop at store 01361 Powhatan, Va. Long time Food Lion customer,18 years in North Carolina 23 years in Va.
When is Food Lion going to put a secure wrapper around your ice cream so it can not be opened and licked like the young person did on the internet. When people see this there will be others that will do the same thing. Since this happened I have been buying Breyers because of the secure wrapper around the lid. I think this issue should be addressed.

Yesterday I posted about Poor deli service at Food Lion in Hampstead NC
The store manager Robbie Hill contacted me today. Robbie is committed to the best customer service him and his store can provide. I feel much better about this deli service problem and Robbie assures me that he is addressing it.
I will return to Food Lion as a regular customer. Again thanks to Robbie for reaching out.

Poor customer service at the deli in Food Lion at Hampstead NC
Wing bar was out of wings and the sign states available from 11 to 2.
Deli people busy stocking and not very helpful when I asked them to cook me wings.
This is the second time I visited and the wing bar was out. Missing sales I guess they have enough not to worry about my small purchase.

Was verbally and almost physically attacked at King William VA Food Lion by a cashier who swore obscenities at me after he refused to give me a refund of a plant he overcharged me $10 for. Unreal. They hire felons at this store and straight ghetto employees. I emailed corporate and to date have not been contacted.

INWOOD WEST VA FIOD LION DELI WORKERS AND NOT ALL OF THEM EITHER SOME ARE VERY PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE ARE VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND JUST PLAIN DOWN RUDE I STOOD THERE FOR 30 MIN WHILE THEY TALKED ABOUT SMOKING CIGARETTES!!!instead of waiting on me and getting me out of there in a PROFESSIONAL polite manner they didnt care about me if I stood there for an hour I’ll never go there again and I could tell the lead person didnt care either she just stood there in the way staring at me instead of helping out I cant get over it because the managers where right there watching it all and I said to them these people need some lessons on being polite to people and he literally just stood like like a statue and didnt say a word to me no apologies no nothing it’s very obvious there is no supervision most likely a spineless manager afraid of his employees because they walk all over management inwood food lion needs help

Michael Desrosiers June 16, 2019 at 7:08 am

Chris….I find it hard to believe that you stood there for 30 minutes…I am not doubting that you waited but no way for that length of time.
I agree with everything else because most their deli locations suck when it comes to BASIC customer service…I just had a frustrating experience at their new store in my area but because the store is new they have not added the store # to the register to send an email …LOL…go figure!

Joseph chevery May 23, 2019 at 8:15 am

went to there asked if you was hiring and was told yes as soon as they saw and was told it was for my handicapped grandson was told to fill out the application on line and come back and see matt the next day did all that so when we got there matt could’nt even come see us he told another to tell ud there are no openings how sad to treat the handicapped that way all my grandson wants in life is to feel normal and be productive

My complaint is not so much with Food Lion as it is with one of the firms they employ, Telecheck. I recently had my credit card compomised and thought I could buy food with a check. I have shopped at Food Lion in Clarksville, Va. for 14 years but always paid by credit card. My check was declined. Upon contacting Telecheck I was told there wasn,t enough info about me so therefore my check was declined. I gave them all sorts of personal information only to be told there is nothing they could do. I asked them to conatact my credit union if
they needed more information. They declined. I found it extremely hard to understand them and asked to be transferred to someone in the U.S. Instead of honoring my request I was sent to a supervisor over there in the Phillipines.
Again I was told there was nothing they could do. That night we went without food because we could not cash a check. I tried another check the next day with the same result. Could you possibly help me resolve this as I still do not have a replacement credit card. Contacting Telecheck was a waste of time. I think I need bigger guns to resolve this issue. I hope you can help. Thanks.

My wife and I have been shopping Food Lion ever since we moved down from NY. Every store we have visited were nice, cleaned, well stocked, people are great, great variety of products, great pricing. If people want to see what bad service is, go live in NY and shop stores there. You don’t know what you have until you loose it.
A big applause for the Food Lion chains!
God bless America!

On 18 Mar 2019 I arrive at Food Lion at 2210hrs (1010pm.) I proceeded to walk in and there was a tall slim white man (employee) saying that Food Lion is closed, I said “what” why he said because they are stripping the floors. I said are you serious you all are going to close the store and your hours are 7am-11pm Mon-Sun. That’s not right for the customers who spend there hard earned money there everyday and the employee or manager who is on duty tonight want to close the store one hour early for his benefit because he might get off late from work. Someone needs to address this issue immediately because that is not a valid reason to close a store to inconvenience your loyal customers who spend money everyday on food, lottery etc. I said to him, I just want to play my lottery numbers and that was a No! (address Food Lion 11710-0 Jefferson Ave. Newport News, Va. 23606)

Seeing Eye Dog & A Manager.
I want to tell you about one of your Managers, while arriving at the Food Lion store (757) in Virginia Beach Va early in the morning , I saw the Manager in the parking lot patting a dog
that was a special seeing eye dog with tags, Bret was so compassionate with his touch patting the dog , the dog owner was found and called and he arrived to pick up the dog . When you treat people or animals as a result they never forget .Bret is that special person and I will never forget as I witnessed it There was a happy ending when the dog was returned to it’s rightly owner . You see, this was a special dog and a special Manager, the dog was a seeing eye dog, my point is this, your best Managers are those who lead with the heart and as a result you have a managers who is that such person Bret is his name .Food Lion , store Manager at store # 757: . 748 Independence Blvd. Virginia Beach Va.

The foodlion in berlin MD is a joke .
Managment is screwed up the store manager does nothing but sit in the back of her office all day and hires people she knows as favors . They fired me because i was pregant with morning sickness so the deli manager without my permission gave me a week off but when i called in to find out when i work next one lady i work with lied to me and told me i dont work one day and worked anthour turns out i did work that day but because she told me something different i lost my job . If i were you and you shop at the deli i wouldnt they never change the grease they cook all food together when it should be seperated they sell out of date rotissere chicken and they have sold out of date meat before . One of my coworkers found 10 meats out of date for almost a week that we counitued to sell when she told managment our store manager nothing was done .

Chris E Heinbaugh May 23, 2019 at 12:13 pm

Favoritism that’s not right they should fire someone who favors a employee over another employee all workers should be treated fairly a

Why I quit Food Lion
For years I shopped FL and for the last few years I bought several 12 packs of the lemon lime seltzer every week and of course all other grocery items. FL was my grocery of first choice. Two 12 packs of seltzer was 2 for five dollars. The the price went to 3.00 each then 3.28 per 12 pack. I went to Harris Teeter where I was able to buy a 12 pack for 2.78. I refuse to be taken advantage of so I’m moving to Harris Teeter.

Mrs mary white October 5, 2018 at 1:09 pm

No complaints . I have shopped at food lion for many many years . My husband and I were stock owners at one time. I can’t say enough about the quality of Customer service, food stock, and fresh produce , that my local stores offer me as a customer . At present I shop at the two local stores in Salisbury. One on West Ennes and the other on Jake Alexander Highway . but occasionally i will drive to another town to sample there quality and service . I have to admit Food Lion lives up to the bar it has set . My one concern Is whether you are paying your employees according to the new economy we are enjoying . The nighttime help and the daytime help are very pleasant people with an aim to help the customer, and make sure the satisfaction level is at it’s highest . Bravo to you! I am a very satisfied customer. 👍👍

SUSAN WILSON May 2, 2018 at 7:06 pm

I won’t even step into a foodlion anymore since the way they treated my son when he was working there. He is on disability and was working there thru a program. The managers were taking advantage of him by having him clean bathrooms that people had crapped all over the place, without gloves because his hands didn’t fit the gloves and they were just plain too lazy to order any. My son was doing it as they had asked, thinking he HAD TO. When I found out I made sure that he was not cleaning anything without the proper equipment. The managers had a problem with this and fired him, Yelling at him while I was on the phone. Of course when I went to pick him up that same manager said he wasn’t fired but was being wrote up for not doing his job. I recorded the entire thing. They threatened to call the cops on me because I asked to see the gloves they said they had that my son refused to wear. They however refused to show me any gloves. I contacted OSHA and they managed to lie their way out of that and make it out that we did it because he was sent home for refusing to do his job. He however was never sent home but fired because he wouldn’t clean poop off a urinal with his bare hands. He had already had to clean poop and blood off the women’s toilet on a previous occasion. Make you sick? Made him sick and he wasn’t aloud to go home, had to clean that up too and keep working. ANYONE every hear of AIDS/HIV FROM BLOOD being transmitted? Maybe bacterial diseases from feces? I am my son’s legal guardian and am responsible for his well being. I can’t put him at risk because you hire stupid, unprofessional management. He lost his job because they said if he came back he would have to continue to do the same job because he is QA. Funny thing is he just got his evaluation and even though they state he was a QA and would never be nothing else it states there that he was great in grocery, fantastic on truck and blocking. Nothing about QA except he helps to train those who come in to do that job. Key Word: HELPS…… the 2 managers that were there that evening were wrote a letter from OSHA and given 7 days to get things in order. A manager who was not there notified OSHA that HE took pictures at that time of the supplies. My son could have kept his job and everything would have been settled if they had showed me the gloves to begin with instead of firing/writing up, threatening me with the police, etc. all I asked was show me the gloves. They couldn’t because they didn’t have any. Why would you take pictures of supply closet not knowing I would do anything? I never threatened them…. Why throw the blame back on my son refusing to do the job when he continued to say he would do the job, just give him gloves? IF YOU HAD THE GLOVES IN THE STOCK ROOM, WHY SEND HIM TO THE FLOOR TO GET GLOVES OR TO THE MEAT DEPARTMENT?????? because they didn’t have them and they lied. I’m furious. They get to keep their jobs. You got management that smoke pot, have run ins with the law, lock customers in overnight in the store, loose store keys. They still have a job. My son worked for foodlion 9 yrs with no problems. You put these idiots in management and in a few months he looses his job. Some one needs to check this store!!! I’ve made sure to let people I know and who know my son what happened and they don’t shop there anymore either. I could have really been hateful when I got food poison from there and sued the crap out of ya. I had to go to the ER $3000 Medical bills to find out the same management knew the cooler had been out and left the cottage cheese on the shelf and I got enough to get sick and miss 4 days of work, 1 visit to the urgent care, 1 visit to ER, 1 visit to family doctor for follow up. Urgent care thought I was having problems with my organs I was so sick… Sent me to ER. When I contacted the manager, he called me a lier … only reason I didn’t do anything is because my son asked me not to because he was worried about the backlash he would get from the management there if I said anything. So I kept quiet!! No I have nothing to do with foodlion anymore. I hate the way they treated my son, me and everyone else. They don’t care about anybody, gotta make that money and if they kill a few people along the way so be it. I’m not going out that way and neither is my family or anyone else If I have anything to say about it!! I’ve contacted the company and no one will respond. All I get is wrong dept. or a wrong website to contact ….. So I’m hopeful this reaches someone at Foodlion or Reaches people in general as a warning about Foodlion….. Whichever…

I am looking for the number to the HR dept for employees

nancy rohr January 5, 2018 at 4:43 pm

I am concerned for YOUR employees. Here in Manassas,VA it is currently 11 degrees at 430 in the afternoon. Today I was in our local Food Lion where the cashiers were working close to the entrance/exit doors in long sleeved t-shirts and blue fingers.
I am told that they are not permitted to wear coats-unless they pay for a Food Lion hoodie. Are you serious???????????????????????? I understand that some parameters must exist for a dress code but in dangerously cold conditions can you REALLY not make an exception? I am totally unimpressed with any modern management practice that allows this policy.
I expect a response.

Joseph Proctor Jr December 28, 2017 at 1:17 pm

I had several incidents with your store manager at Louisburg, NC Food Lion. My last episode was so bad that I retrieved the 1-800 number from the Asst Mgr and called it while I was still in the parking lot. I have asked for his help several times with a sense of negative response and attitude. But my last visit is when he was so rude and disrespectful that I had to question him regarding his unwelcoming behavior. I had entered the store, which is my regularly visited grocery store, looking for Pillsbury “no sugar added” chocolate cake mix. I saw the manager stocking on the same row where the baking goods were. I told him that I was glad to see him and asked for his help. As I asked for his help, he turned and walked away from me and continued stocking. It wasn’t until I went to him again that he responded to my need for help and there was no mistake, he knew. I had been purchasing Pillsbury “no sugar added” cake and brownie mix for Food Lion and was concerned that it hadn’t be on the shelf the last couple of times that I wanted to purchase it. I pointed out my concerns and he immediately responded to make me feel that I was ignorant or stupid. He pointed around the shelf stating “are you sure that you aren’t looking for this or maybe this or even this”. I had previously explain specifically what I required and he then stated that “if we don’t have it, then we don’t carry it”. He did all of this without conducting any research. He truly displayed a sense of annoyance from me just asking for help. He showed no customer friendly behavior. I patron Food Lion often, sometimes as much as 3 times a week. I have had a great relationship with most employees and previous manager Mr. Jonathan. But the new manager, in my eyes, doesn’t qualify to be an Employee, let alone a Store Manager.
I called your 1-800 number and talked to a complaint department and received equal, if not worse treatment. I explained the feelings and treatment that I endured from this Manager and after explaining in minutes of details and repetitive statement to her, she had the nerve to ask me “what negative behavior did he display?”as though she hadn’t been listening or was just humoring me. I threw in the towel and refused to become more frustrated then I already was. I decided to boycott Food Lion and spend my hard earned money at either Carlie C’s, Walmart or Moss’s, matter a fact, I will travel as far as Henderson, Wake Forest, Raleigh or Youngsville before shopping at any Food Lion, especially Louisburg. I have gone as far as to share my experience with all of my neighbors, family and friends. And encouraging them not to shop at Food Lion because of the rude and disrespect that I suffered from your manager and 1-800 customer service, which makes the words “customer service” a joke.
I’m a service connected disable veteran, former Marine, and I have been a lot of places around the world. But I believe that my experience with Food Lion shows one of major concern and repair.
I will continue to complain to anyone and everyone who is willing to listen. I’ve even considered contacting the local news station in hopes that they will air a news section directed at Food Lion and representation towards the public and a service connected disable veteran.
I expect a reply to this email from your corporate office or I will be sending a copy of this email to the CEO of Food Lion.

The meat manager at the store on 7550 Dorchester Rd, North Charleston, SC 29418 is belligerent and disrespectful to his employees and curses at them in front of customers and screams and yells like his a moron who has no other words to use. The need to fire him and let the younger meat manager take his place ASAP. I have other options for places to shop and will be taking my business to Bi lo or Walmart.

shelby high November 27, 2017 at 11:38 pm

On Saturday, November 25th at exactly 5:14 pm at your Locust NC location, I checked out at register 2 with a cashier by the name of Zachary and requested $200 cash back. The nice young gentleman handed me a $100 bill and 5 $20 bills and I placed the money in my right pocket with my car keys. I proceeded to walk out to my car and remove my keys from my pocket when the money fell out into the parking lot. Just to be clear, this is all on camera. A nice elderly gentleman then finds the money in the parking lot and, in trying to be a good Samaritan, turns the cash into customer service. “Coincidentally” at the exact moment he hands my money to your employee, a lady nearby overheard and claimed the money instantly. And without asking her what denomination the money was in, if it was in an envelope or folded up, he just hands it to her and she leaves. This was entirely irresponsible. I work for a competitor grocery store and this is not how we handle these types of situations. Had she been able to say what denomination it was in correctly or even been asked such a question then fine. Had the manager or customer service clerk even attempted to review the cameras for the area where the man found the money, they would have clearly seen it did not belong to this lady as they did later after they had already messed up. The cashier remembered me as well as the money he gave me and in what denomination it was in as well. The cashier and customer service clerk clearly admitted that it was my money and that they had irresponsibly given it away without asking any identifiable questions or reviewing camera footage. I have waited for a resolve and to no avail. If the woman had just picked the money up directly from the parking lot and put it in her pocket, I wouldn’t even be wasting my time with this. However, from the moment that nice older man made the customer service clerk aware of the lost money, it was food lions responsibility and the team at your locusts location did not follow policy or take that responsibility seriously when they decided to hand my money to a random woman who just coincidentally happened to be there to hear the old man say he found the money. I know, in being a member of management for another grocery chain, that we as a company would own that employees mistake and take care of the customer. What I want to know, is what food lion is going to do to handle the employees carelessness and lack of proper handling of a large amount on money that belongs to me as shown on camera and backed up by the cashier who rang me up and handed me the money, at a time so close to the holiday. I will go as far as I need to until this is owned and handler appropriately by this company as it should have been from the start. My contact info is above. I will be in touch. Thank you in advance for your time.

Jennifer Dodge Blanchard October 1, 2017 at 1:13 pm

I find I store specials on items expired or set to expire within a day or two. Apparently the Store is trying to avoid waste by fooling customers with “sale” pricing. produce isn’t good, advertised specials aren’t ringing up right. shop and earn program which I like increased my spending thresholds too high- especially when compare to others using program- my percentage savings is lower than several of my friends for the same time period- which isn’t fair. foodlion has been my go to- but sadly I am looking at other stores as I am becoming more and more disappointed in my store. On a recent visit I had to hand over bag upon bag of prepackaged and expired produce to an associate who said he just restocked and everything was fresh! Ugh! They are hoing people don’t read exps. will not continue to shop at Foodlion unless things change… better coordination internally of pricing so correct prices are charged upon checkout, more specials on Fresh food- not expired… more fair pricing and incentives in shop and earn…
And I tried to comment online w/cust service for foodlion but that form isn’t working .. said I had to identify my store but gave no options to do so so I could not submit my comments.

Trisha September 3, 2017 at 4:23 pm

I have been shopping around your recently renovated stores in Virginia. The obstacle courses made shopping a challenge. Because your renovations were very much needed and appreciated it made tolerating the mess acceptable. The only thing that made me want to stop shopping at Food Lion was the number of 12 items or less checkout lines. I had 15 items to purchase. The cashear said, “this line is for less items than you have”. So I moved to the only line that would help me. With all lines 12 items or less and only 1 Full Service line, my frozen food began thawing as I waited to check out. So I left everything there in line and went to another store who allows people to buy more items at one time and my frozen food was still in tacked when I arrived home.

Disrespected Customer August 19, 2017 at 10:29 am

Went to your Food Lion Store in your Richmond Hill, GA location last night (We have been long term
Customers of your store from when u had the other Food Lion Store and entire time u opened the new food Lion Store in RH and frequent your store several xs a week and as a family spend big money at your stores yearly and have supported your stores since 1998 till the other night if I see this woman that treated me so disrespectful unnecessarily again and Things do not change in ur store we will be taking our business and $$$ elsewhere n we spend big $$$ in your store all the time.) You have a definite problem with Reverse Racism in this store towards the whites by the black Manager n black employees.
I have experienced it several xs in this particular store and have not brought it to ur attention till now.
I also have a issue with lazy black employees that do not want to work and don’t work can’t even count the number of Xs entered the store and saw the white middle aged folks working there gossiping amongst themselves at the registers ignoring the customers not even greeting or wlnowlegingbtjem it’s personally happened to me numerous xs and it’s rude. Black bagger s that don’t even acknowledge you bag the groceries and walk away.
Last week went to your store and saw a large group of blacks gathered at the end of the check out in a large circle gossiping none of them working while All the whites were cashiering not one of them was bagging or doing anything but standing in the large circle talking and messing around with each other they were very loud and unprofessional the line I was in was quite long they were there quite awhile
Than a few weeks before I went in same scene there was one elderly hardworking woman the only one working as a cashier no one was bagging for her I ended up bagging my own groceries as I so often have to do at this location despite plenty of employees because most of them don’t work
( the blacks) There again was a large group of them standing around same behavior socializing as if they were at a party not one of them working.
This is a common site n theme at this store.
I have seen it as well as my family n friends on numerous occasions There also has been many times that I have been at the register and cashier
(Agian the blacks) don’t even acknowledge u but are instead standing there talked no to other employees they ring u up while in full conversation,
I’m not even prejudiced but I am pointing out who the problem people are and where the problems lie and I can’t help that it’s the blacks that are exhibiting this type of behavior ruining The professionalism of the store the atmosphere for us as well paying customers and these are the very people that are making the experience at your store unbearable for us they are incredibly lazy and everyone I have dealt with has a bad attitude and a Ghetto Attitude I’m going to tell u like it is and what it is- I don’t know what the problem is but I’ve seen this for years Everytime u get a black Manager in there they hire a mostly black crew and than there have been nothing but issues we went to this store years before many years under white managment and never had one complaint now there’s nothing but complaints we have n were not complainers.
Most people wouldn’t take the time to let u know the
Problems and ongoing issues at this store but I hate to see the closest store to our home going down hill and being run like this and operating like this it’s sad and disgusting. Also ur food quality has gone down purchased a Cesar salad last night it looked fine in the bag got home ended up having to throw half of it away it was wilted so bad in the bag in areas I couldn’t see I went to buy Bertolli pasta sauce last night most of ur stock was expired! A family member purchased yougurt the other day it was two days from expiration! I went to buy a head of lettuce ec the other day ended up walking away they all looked that bad! Last night way I was treated though took the cake I was patiently standing in a long line to purchase lottery tickets there were two black clerks with bad Unprofessional attitudes and the one that waited on me should not be working with customers let alone at your store representing Food Lion.
They were really low class Ghetto gutter attitudes and were talking like they were in the ghetto or on the street not at A grocery store. I stood in the long line patiently waiting for my lottery tickets I waited for quite awhile when the clerk asked if anyone was doing money order s it was my turn to be waited on to my shock she pulled the man that was behind me and had just showed up and waited on him I was rudely pushed aside and ignored.
I had just had a rude experience with ur black bagger when I went threw the line I was never acknowledged or spoken to or a word said he bagged the groceries and left them all on the counter and turned his back on me I don’t need a conversation but decent common courtesy goes a long long way he literally stood there for a moment with his back turned to me while he scurried off to gossip than I get in the long lottery line to buy a ticket (when I entered the store I headed at first to the lottery line I was ahead of this really rude black woman customer that literally almost plowed me down n ran into me and jumped in front of me to get ahead of me in the line and the black clerk took her
It was just BS I was so disgusted and upset by the behavior I decided to go shopping 1st get the lottery tickets after than I experience nothing but unnecessary pure Unprofessionalisam and rudeness from this black clerk I politely told her that I was in line 1st and had waited a long while in order to be waited on I didn’t understand why she took the man behind me who it wasn’t even his turn
It was very rude and you know after the whole experience in your store I was ready to return all my pricey groceries I had purchased from ur store let’s not b mistaken Food Lion prices r not cheap!
Instead of being Professional n apologizing to me this black b&)$h and owning her behavior I would have been satisfied with that and u would not be hearing from me now – got as loud as she possibly could be and got all ghetto on me caused a scene
And started saying loudly with a bad attitude that I was mistaken she said over and over repeatedly that I was mistaken and did not know what I was talking abt. Trying to turn the situation on me and trying to make a fool out of me to all the other customers and staff nearby that could hear causing a huge scene and further escalating the situation to a whole new Again Unnecessary level.
At that point I had enough and told her that she was the only one that was mistaken and being rude she took my money for the lottery tickets continued yelling that I was mistaken and didn’t know what I was talking abt yes she was yelling this as she took the money causing a scene and walked over to the other register further drawing attention and continued making a huge blown out scene she said something abt me to the nearby cashier and not only had the entire line from customer service looking at me but also ur cashiers from the lines n all other customers making it out like it was me that was the problem n the instigator of the situation when it was actually your horrible black ghetto clerk yelling at me n across the store abt me and to me She continued to taunt me laugh at me had the other black clerk beside her join I. As she spoke abt. Me who by the way she didn’t even know and this was my first ever interaction with this particular clerk and the clerk beside her in customer service at this point she had other customers staring at me and making comments abt me it was extremely uncomfortable and uncalled for Unprofessional n Unnecessary at this point I had had enough of the abuse n Verbal Abuse I was receiving from your black ghetto clerk that’s what she was n that’s how I’m going to call it I was going to ask for a manager I noticed this clean that was so Unbelievably Unprofessional to me was not wearing a name tag
I than politely asked her what her name was she refused to give me her name I asked several Xs each time she refused to give me her name.
I wanted her name to talk to the manager and discuss her what she had done to me and how she has treated me Her response to me asking for her name besides refusing to give it to me several xs was to say to me in the most sarcastic high pitched unnatural voice that she was Sorry way she did it was to further taunt me and she kept making nasty comments abt. Me to the other black clerk in customer service and to the other customers she was laughing at me had the other black clerk laughing at me and several other customers laughing at me further making me out to be a bigger fool and had other customers in ur customer service line and within earshot making nasty comments abt me I had enough I told the clerk Who had refused to give me her name several xs As she
Continued to yell it’s not that serious over and over
To me that she needed to give me her name she told me she wasn’t going to and didn’t have to I told her I would find out her name and report her behavior she said she wasn’t giving me her name n I couldn’t get it.
You know I help pay your staffs salaries and support your store and have since 1998 we spend big money in ur store like I said earlier as a family we frequent your store several xs a week at ur store and spend big money yearly at ur store.
There’s no reason last night I should have been treated in any way shape or form as I was as a paying customer apparently this particular staff member and slot of ur staff have forgotten how to treat paying customers!!! There’s no reason that I should if ever had that experience in ur store !!!
I should have never been spoken to in that manner by your staff!!! Someone representing the Food Lion Brand!!! Or treated that way by this Customer Service Rep !!! She shouldn’t even be working with customers like I said before let alone be in the customer service department!!!
Apparently your staff last night forgot that they also are staff!!
I was so upset I ended up leaving!!!
Before I could of spoken to a manager.
I guarantee I have been and my family has been a customer longer than ur black ghetto customer service reps cashiers and bagfers and manager has been at the store working.
I guarantee we have spent more money over the years and presently in your store than any of them have And u know I normally don’t take the time to
Write out a complaint or speak to a manager most people don’t they just won’t return to the store or do business with it anymore after bad experiences, I am taking the time out of my very busy schedule n life time I will never get back because there needs to be very serious changes and this particular Food Lion Store in Richmond Hill ur management and ur staff I hate to see this store which used to be our favorite place to shop go down hill like this due to a few horrible employees while there are other hardworking good employees there also Ur staff is a direct reflection of ur management I never had a issue in your store in all years been a shopper there except one day staff was really out of control another time again it was another black employee with a ghetto attitude I asked to speak to the manager the black Manager because this employees behavior needed to be addressed than n there and a stop to the behavior I waited at the customer service desk for over a half hour your black Manager never showed up at the customer service counter to address the problem or to even talk to me all day he time the employee continued to act up and laugh that the manager wouldn’t come n didn’t care I dnt know at the time the manager was black and had never met the manager and there’s been xs when we were treated in a rude manner over the years by a employee but it was always something that was so rare and infrequent that we let it go and never enough of a situation where we had to bring it to managements attention or your corporates office attention till now you know I waited a half hour than over a half hour for the black Manager to come to the customer service desk He was called repeatedly in the store intercom going threwout the store he never responded to the pages and never showed up to the customer service desk to address me as a customer or resolve the issue I had as a customer or to correct the out if control employee I dnt. Know what was going on although this was awhile ago I never forgot the way I was treated it was so shocking like last night and Unprofessional u know as I waited for the manager to show up patiently I dnt know why the manager wasn’t there I had never complained to management before or anything u know I walked the store and I found ur manager nearby actually a few aisles down close to the customer service aisle pretending like he was stacking something on a shelf ignoring the numerous calls to the customer service desk thisvwas awhile ago but I left the store upset and disgusted and For awhile I stopped shopping at ur store should have never returned to ur store so I would of not had another bad experience at ur store which seem all too frequent now but if u have management acting Unprofessional and leading the staff Unprofessional than ur going to have the experience I had last night.
And the staff knows they can get away with it.
And the hey did those two xs at my expense.
Even though the black Manager treated me this way awhile back I never forgot it I never reported it to corporate till now I don’t have the cashiers name at the customer service desk despite asking as I explained she refused repeatedly to give it to me but I bought two lottery tickets I was also conviently given no reciept which would of shown me the staff members name I was refused a reciept all I know is she worked at the customer service desk when It had to be around 6:30 because when I left the store I believe it was around 6:38 pm you know who works ur store and u can easily find out who was working the customer service register around that time it was my left side she was in towards the door and u also know who ur manager is and who runs that store and who the other clerk was beside the clerk that was causing problems and also conducted herself in a less than professional manner I have also sent a email to ur company last night but I was unable to be very detailed or give much info. At all abt. The incident that took place yest. Fri. Night due to the limited amount of numbered words that u can be used. I want this issue addressed these offending employees fired because I guarantee if there treating me this way there also treating others in such a manner and If I return to ur store n see any of these employees working there I guarantee my family and I will never visit ur store again let alone spend money in the store and like I said we spend big money in your store weekly monthly and yearly we will also inform all our rather large group of friends n family abt. The experiences had and guarantee if this is not addressed and these people are not fired u will also lose there money as well there thank god are other options and grocery stores to shop Our large group of friends and family also spend big money in your store if this is not addressed appropriately expect a boycott from all of us for now aId rather spend the extra money and shop at Publix they at least are always Professional n know how to treat there customers that support them there Store and staff at least Publix hasn’t forgotten who supports there stores staff n salaries Luke Food Lion has Sadly.
Don’t forget Good Lion u used to for years have a much bigger store we used to frequent for years b who’re ur new store so at one time u did have to downsize u keep operating the way you are and treating people way you have treated me you will be out of business in no time this is a small town and thing abt. Small towns and word of mouth h is people talk and it’s very effective I’ve seen businesses in Richmond Hill be run out of town and close for less over the years I have been a resident.
I hope that you will improve ur store the experience and your staff and learn a lesson and the problems and conduct that needs to be addressed and u need to do a whole staff clean out at your Richmond Hill location for many years and years ago u had a very Professional kind white female manager she kept her staff And the store Professional the food was always fresh never out of date like several instances have seen recently she kept her staff diverse seemed to be less problems than. Seemed when she left store and staff went down hill and the quality of the food and overall experience Sad.

Duke August 24, 2017 at 8:22 pm

lol boy you’re racist. Clearly

Disrespected Customer August 28, 2017 at 12:59 pm

Not a Racist by any means Sorry if it sounds that way not my intentions My intention was to
Only share my experiences in that particular store.
And to share the fact withen my experience n at least over the last several years this particular store has a reputation of reverse racism towards
White customer by blacks not all of them but there’s enough of them that do it on a constant basis n it’s blatenly obvious what there doing as it happens so often it’s ruined the experience for me as a very good customer since 1998 and my family we spend big money at the store yearly n frequent the store several xs a week , I’m tired of being treated like dirt all the time this store has gone so down hill in the last 6 years it’s so sad to see!
We spend such good money all the time in the store and have since 1998 before when this store was the original store N a bigger store in Richmond Hill and since the new down sized food Lion opened we have been excellent customers there no reason for these bad experiences n constant experiences withen this store N it’s not only I that has been poorly treated in this store over the years I and we have seen so many other customers over the years at this particular store N there’s absolutely no reason for it This particular store has forgotten that the customer helps pay the customer reps salary the cashiers salary and all the other salarys functioning threwout the food lion store the store itself the vendors the farmers ect.
It’s so sad to finally get a store near here N the store for many years had gone down hill .
This store went from being really decent to and it’s because they have hired so many people there that are unprofessional low class, lazy ,
It’s affected the whole stores atmosphere because there’s enough in there at one x or any given x that are working together and acting this way that anymore and for the last many years that when we go to this store we expect the bad service rude n low class people working there because they make up at least 90 percent of the workforce withen the store which is ruining the stores brand n making it so there losing customers all the x there r other options n places that do not conduct there business this way or treat there customers like garbage on a ongoing basis there is 10!percent good hard working people at that store n it makes it hard for them because the ones that stand out are the ones I mentioned n that’s what people remember . Sad also that this is the cheapest store in town but even if it is I don’t expect to be treated like sh$& all the time for no reason I am not a racist the ones that have treated me n other customers as they have past n present Arw the Racists I said there is reverse racism going on that store and this is my first complaint n first time I have taken the time to point it out was in my earlier post n again today when I contacted the Corporate Office.
I have endured it n ignored it for 6 years but way I was recently treated was the last straw!
Most people have one bad experience n that’s it they never do business with a company again.
Most of the people do not take there precious time to complain to a company and let them know how there store is failing n where it’s failing to try and improve the stores Brand N atmosphere.
Most people I know wldnt endorse this b.s. For the years we have n continue to shop st the store and say nothing n ignore it!
My complaint I can assure u is anything but petty n legitimate.
Food Lion needs to do some serious house cleaning at this store of there staff N never forget again to always be professional in every instance And that Staff Serve the Customers N the Customers salary is paid by the customers!
And remember that the store or business will not temain open under these particular cirXXXXstances N if it does it will not remain open long there’s plenty of good hard working people of all races n ethnicity in this town that are hardworking n want n need jobs n value there jobs Hire them and will treat customers right.
None of this should even b a issue!
Like I said before it’s not all the people in the store there are some very good hardworking black people but there’s so few of them that r hardworking at this store the bad ones that are lazy rude and should never b working with customers in the first place r what my constant experience has been and I keep encountering these particular disrespectful employees often several xs in one visit and it’s given my very bad experience I’m tired of seeing the whites and people working there a$$s off middle age n elderly n other races working there a$$es off n working a hell of a lot harder than they need to because the ones that r paid to help r standing around in a large circle end of bagging station like there at a party gossiping playing with there phones with not a care in the world I’ve seen this so many xs it’s sickening N it’s not fair to the employees that do work.
I wldnt even mention a race if it wasn’t a problem but it is a problem not with them all but with so many of them . There needs to b diversity regardless of the race of the manager.
All the employees at all xs need to b professional N hard working st all Xs.
All the employees need to work together at the store n be hardworking to make the store successful.
I can’t help there are so many racist employees that hate white people at this particular store and that there is a culture at this store of reverse racism.
I’m not a racist never have been never will b
So the person that falsely accused me of being a racist is incredibly ignorant n I wldnt b surprised if u were one of the racists that works at this store. No one regardless of race color or gender should be treated way I have experienced a customer is a customer money is money.
like I said over n over it wasn’t just one bad experience it’s been years of bad experiences by a particular minority over n over again.

How many customers r being treated wrong that dnt. Speak up for various reasons.

This is abuse of customers .

Also quality of food has gone way down had to throw away food I bought becaus it was no good several xs and a family member came home last x with expired expensive food they didn’t realize had expired n there was several rows n rows of expired Bertolli Pasta Sauce for sale
So just when I dnt. Think the experience could get any worse it does n has.

Agian not a racist but wonder how many people have become a racist after there experience in ur store N wonder how many customers u have lost n will continue to lose if u don’t make some drastic changes have standards at this store.
And even if u clean house at this store because of this stores bad reputation over the years this particular store will have to be constantly monitored so it dosnt go back to what it is today’s this store has been n is n will continue to be the worst place to shop in Richmond Hill if it continues like this.
There’s 2 other options to shop for groceries in Richmond Hill I wld rather drive a bit more to get to them and pay a bit more than to endure this needless atmosphere I apologize to all the good workers whatever race u are.
And that u have certain people bringing the store down n rant hardworking like u are this needed to be finally brought to light and dealt with.
I’ve spent years n my family has being treated like crap for no reason and I’m so tired of bagging our own groceries when there’s plenty of workers to do it but there just standing around gossiping I don’t work for Food Lion.

can hardly be a racist when many of my friends are black as well as white Hispanic Asian all cultures all races
And if I previously voted for Obama!

Kendra November 2, 2017 at 4:03 pm

No it seems to me like you are racist and ignorant the color of her skin had nothing to do with you be disrespected the money you spend in Foodlion cant buy you common sense i bet 9 times out of 10 you were the racist customer that threw your money on the counter I see customers like you everyday hope she treats you the same way again you racist asshole you deserve it !!!!!! Coming from a Foodlion employee

Doreen June 15, 2018 at 4:29 pm

I brought my mother and 9 year old daughter to food lion on Nanticoke road after a very long day of work in ocean city just to pick up some things (medium to small order of groceries ). There was no one in line at the express checkout lane (12 items or less) so my handicap mother (in her motorized shopping cart the store provides) started loading her groceries on the belt to be rung up. The cashier, Tiara, informed my mother that she had to have 12 items or less and to please to go to another lane.

NOTE: there was no one in line and tiara was laughing along w other employees not working prior to us entering her 12 items or less express line.

My mother did have a bit of an attitude due to there not being a lot of business she couldn’t understand why it would be an issue. After a minute or two, the front end supervisor, Bob was brought into the situation and he told Tiara to just ring my mother up. The supervisor then walked away (thinking he had calmed the situation) and continued working. Tiara then starting ringing up my mother. While she was ringing her up she continued to pointlessly argue with a paying customer (my mother) after she received instructions from her supervisor to do just that….ring her up!
Tiara repeatedly used profanity in front of not only multiple paying customers with in ear shot BUT as well as my 9 year old daughter and a 3 year litter girl standing behind us with her mother. Tiara repeatedly said “I’m a grown a** woman, I see there are kids there, I have kids too. I’m a grown a** woman”. This being her response when I leaned over, saw her name tagged and tried to appease a bad situation by trying to reason with tiara and tell her ” hey there are small kids right here, let’s try not to let this get out of control, I’m sorry about this situation but there are kids right here listening and watching”.

NOTE: while this is all transpiring, Tiara is laughing, making jokes and staring at my mother, almost as an attempt to intimidate or put her down in some way (like means girls do on the playground in elementary school ).

I shop at this location multiple times a week. It’s my number one, go to stop for almost everything. Everyone is always great, friendly and always helpful. I spoke with the store manager Russel and feel he will take care of it. I am writing this to ensure that something does happen. The next time I walk into this food lion I sure do not want to see this girls face again. I’m sure she has great qualities, working with the public IS NOT one of them. I definitely don’t want someone around my child using that kind of language, I will take my business elsewhere and make it known on social media as well if that is the case.
Food lion is a great company and so is the store on Nanticoke road in Salisbury, MD. This is why I feel the need to write this, I know food lion has higher standards then this low class woman you having working there.

I went to the Food Lion on Durham Rd in Roxboro, NC on 7/25/17. I walked up to the customer service desk to have my card scanned for the instant win grocery giveaway. The CSM was next door at Subway so a cashier went and got her. The CSM, Robin, immediately came in and said “we don’t give gift cards here, you have to buy 5 of the items on the list.” I explained to her that I knew that was not true that it was all over facebook all day that people were winning in the same way I was requesting. She then told me that “they don’t go by facebook cause that’s social media.” She then went into the office to speak with someone else about the issue. She stayed gone quite some time. While she was gone, I pulled up the official rules of the grocery giveaway directly from Food Lion’s website. She eventually came back and I read the rules to her and showed them to her. She said “well, I just called the Food Lion down the street and they do it the same way we do. You have to buy 5 items, we can’t just scan your card.” I then asked her if she was calling me a liar??? When I’m standing there holding proof in black and white of the company’s policy on the situations but she continued to tell me I was wrong, that constitutes calling me a liar. I asked to speak to the manager. Eric was the grocery manager and was the only one on duty at the time. It was obvious that she was running her mouth on the headset due to the fact that several cashiers and even 2 guys working in produce stopped what they were doing to see what was going on. Eric eventually came up to help me and I started over with him, showed him the rules in black and white. He understood what I was saying but didn’t offer any remedy either. I then asked when the store manager would be in. I was told he would be in the next morning (today) so I left and decided I would call in the morning. I tried to call the manager this morning but unfortunately, he wasn’t in yet. As a customer, I don’t appreciate the way Robin handled the issue. She could have simply said that she doesn’t know how to do it, instead she tried to lie to my face and tell me that her store wasn’t participating. It isn’t up to the store to decide to participate or not when it’s a companywide giveaway. I have never been so frustrated due to the fact that I had the proof that what I was saying was true, Robin just wanted to continue telling me I was wrong. What happened to the customer always being right when the are in fact right????

I went to a the Food Lion nearest my home and looked for a eye round roast –the employee in the meat department said they were out and woul not have any more until the truck delivered more the next day. I asked was there no one in the meat department who could cut and package a roast. He said they were not preparing meat anymore–that all there meat comes in on a truck. I was very disappointed. I remember in the not too far past, that if I needed a certain cut of meat the butcher section would try to accomdate me by having me shop for the rest of my groceries and then swing back by the meat department where they would have my roast ready. I am hoping I misunderstood his explanation and that you are still cutting your own meats. I do not want a possible prefrozen, thawed out piece of meat-I wanted fresh meat and your store and harris teeter are the only two stores on my end of town that had fresh meat cut there in the store. If this is indeed, a change in your meat department policy, I wish you will reconsider as that leaves me only harris teeter to shop for my meats. I like your store as it is clean, remodeled, and has a good selection of staples but I will not go to two stores to buy groceries–Please tell me if you have one store in Winston Salem that still has a active , fresh cut meat department. Thank you. S. Ireland

Purchased 2 Klondike bars on 6/1/17 at $3.49 each total $ 6.98, in the store today 6/8/17 bars on sale 2 for $5.00, asked the service desk if I could return with receipt from 6/1 and get adjustment – was told that I could. Drove home got receipt returned to the store, customer service desk called a manager, was told that I could not get an adjustment, would have to return the bars and get a refund. Talked to 3 different managers at the store, drove home got the bars received a refund. Will not shop there going forward – Publix up the street has a customer service division that works. Food lion in Lewisville, nc has a major problem with favoritism and lack of confidentiality. The front end manger has major problems and needs to be removed due to his health problems and other problems. I hear lots of complaints about him but there is one that needs to be check, customer has brought this to attention and seems nothing being done. The front end manger is asking customers he personal knows for drugs while,on the clock, taking them and also selling. He needs to remove from this store asap, it’s not something they should be doing. Thanks by the way his name is Antony Smith aka Tony from store # 1062 Lewisville, NC

I recently tried one of your taste of inspiration products. The New Delhi sections are very nice. Though it was poorly promoted there are very nice items to be found there and very reasonable. I recently tried the lobster and shrimp ravioli, the mushroom ravioli, and the Italian sausage ravioli. Unfortunately I have been unable to find these products any longer in the stores after checking seven food lion in the High Point Jamestown Greensboro area. After speaking to a couple managers in the stores only to find out that these products have been re-ordered but are either backordered not available or may not be continued is very disappointing and doesn’t really seem to make sense as a way to kick off the new area of the store

I have been a Food Lion customer for many , many years at the New Market Road location in Richmond, Virginia. Recently I had hip replacement surgery and called this location this morning and spoke with Ashley who was in charge. I wanted to ask if I sent in my adult daughter with my personal check, drivers license in order that she purchase groceries for me while I am unable to walk. Ashley then told me that that was not possible and that all people using personal checks must present an id before is check is approved.
This is amazing as I have been shopping here for over 15 years and NEVER ONCE has one of the many cashiers asked to see my drivers license. They simply take my blank check, put it through your register, I sign my name and then I am finished. I asked if there was another means in which we could do this and she said cash or debit card only. After I explained that I never had a cashier ask for identification, she said she couldn’t answer on what cashiers did or didn’t do! After this she told me to have a “good day”

I have sent it many surveys and they have always been very good at this location, however, I did ask Ashley what they did to accommodate disabled individuals. She said simply cash or debit card. I think my future business may be best served at another location.

I work at 1365 in Charlotte, the management is very rude the lady that works in the back. Is very rude also she talks to the people that come in vendors in a harsh manner.

When I said something to her and to management I was told that these people are nothing but liars and thieves. My husband is a vendor and I did not appreciate the way you talk about these people. One person stood up on so it was threaten

Dear Mr. Roland Smith,CEO

Or to whom ever this may concern. On May 11, 2017, between the hours of 7:30 and 8:00pm. Dover Delaware.
Food lions, I was a customer waiting in line to check out.
There was only two registers available at this time.
A couple minutes later, A white female customer service representative open up another register.
As I was waiting to be call next in line. Another female customer came up behind me, who was also, white. The customer service representative completely ignored my presence. And call the white female customer over to the opening register as I was continuously waiting.
So, of course I am pissed 😡, I am a black female.
So I ask your check out sales person to call the manager.
So after I check out I explained to the store manager what had happened. I said to the store manager( that I know that I am wearing black today , but am I that dam black that you can see me. he had a short laugh and apologize to me for her wrong doing. I said, please, don’t apologize ‘
But correct your associate before this continuously happen to someone else. He then walked over to her to address the issue. As, I was leaving the store, my husband enter and I explained to him the situation. And leaving the store, A white tall male follow my husband and i to the car, which he was a customer as well. He stated to us that the people in the store is always nasty to him and his family. And he just move to the area and sometimes he Drive all the way to another store just to get treated fairly. That the only reason that he came into the store today is that he needed paper plates cause of family gathering that day. He replied, that it was sad that the food lions employee wasn’t happy and we all said we would not let them spoil our joy. So, after, you read this don’t feel bad, just monitor who you hire and treat people.
I do look forward to your response, are you will here my experience on the News channel in the near future. Please take this seriously, Ain’t nobody got time for this!!

Sincerely, C. Hodge

I have worked for Food Lion for over three years. I’m an office associate at #1265. I will be leaving shortly. I have crohns disease. February 8, 2017. I went to work sick as could be. I asked my Assistant store manager (Senada) if I could go home when my Assistant customer service manager (Mary) came in at 12pm. She said yes. I made sure all the office work was done, I made sure the cashiers had their breaks/lunches were done. There was someone else there to work my 12-4 so nobody would be empty handed. Mary got there and I told her I was sick and leaving. She threw a fit. Threw open the customer service gate so it hit the wall. Told me I needed to quit. No one liked me there anyway. I didn’t deserve my position. Mind you this is the 2nd time she has acted this way towards me. I just left then thought no I was calling human resources. I did. The following Monday at work Mary was opening boxes of bags I was on a register along with another co-worker. Mary looked at us pointed at me and acting like she was cutting her throat with the box cutter. I take that as a threat. Told my CSM (Kelly) and Store Mangaer( Kaci) Kaci’s response was a chuckle and said I don’t know what I’m going to do with Mary she even yells at me. Called human resources again talked to Karen Munch. Told her everything that was
happening in the store. Kept calling. Supposedly she came into the store while I was on vacation in April and talked to Kaci and Mary. Nothing was done of it. I’ve been living in he’ll at that store and refuse to leave until something was done. Everyday Mary walked by calling me a snitch and see what I get. The worse part was I was trying to get out of there. Kelly the CMS was lying and giving me bad references. So I got people to call and got copies of the lies. Karen told me the case was closed 3 times. Who closed them, I didn’t? They haven’t been solved. Friday I spoke with her she said the tape was deleted bc its been over a month…thats not my fault. I said something when it happened. I threatened to get a lawyer because Kelly is lying on me and Mary threatens me with a box cutter and it’s been 3 months later and nothing has happened. Karen Munch was in the store yesterday and Mary left the store upset. Today she is back in there. You tell me how that is fair justice, I shouldn’t have to work in an environment like that. The tape was deleted but I have witnesses. I thought Food Lion had a zero tolerance for bullying or threatening. Who is wrong here? Why must I work in that environment. Things can’t be solved in 3 months. Do I want her fired …No I just want her transferred to another store. This is the only job she’s had. She was 16 or 17 yrs old when she started now she’s 35. The managers here protect her bc she does their job too. She needs fresh eyes that will correct her. I still work here until the problem is solved. My next step is reporting it to CCOE then fighting in court if I have too. I just want her removed she I don’t have to feel threatened.

I get discriminated against by two cashiers that work at the Food Lion on Ehringhaus Street in Elizabeth City. When they do check out my items they act like they don’t even want wait on me. I have noticed with other customers they are friendlier to them. Today one of the cashier’s in question looked at me like why am I in the store then she asked if I needed to be waited on. That doesn’t even make sense. I try to avoid these two cashiers and go in another checkout line if I can, but sometimes I can’t. A cashier shouldn’t roll their eyes or give the customer attitude because they don’t like them. I don’t know these cashiers personally, but a family member told me I need to report them.

Sunday April 2nd I went into Food Lion in Dunn with my 8 year old daughter. I got a whole shopping cart full. As I went to check out there was a man, then a lady in front of me checking out. Apparently the man is a local homeless man. A blonde haired boy,( not a man because a man would never do what he did) employee got out a can of Lysol and began to spray literally so much that it got in my throat, all around the homeless man, while laughing with the other cashier and picking on the Man, and saying, “clean up on checkout line number 7”. They went on and on as he limped out of the store. He was a
Paying customer just like I was. My 8 yr old turned to me with tears in her eyes and said momma
Why are they picking on that man? I was so upset that I dropped my case
Of water and it
Busted and they had to get me another. I can not believe that food
Lion would have employees who acted like these two acted. I said loudly that they should pray for him and help him instead of hurting him. I was about to put my whole grocery cart of groceries back. I am still so disgusted I don’t know what to do. I went and got the “homeless man” a hotel room for a few nights so he could bathe.i hope he never goes back in there and gets treated like this ever again. I know food lion values their customers and stand by their name. I will never
Go back into the dunn food lion and I have and will continue to let everyone I know what happened and not to go in there as long as those two employees are there. I am a business owner and know I would die if these were my
Employees. This situation has been shared over 150 times on Facebook and I hope
That food lion will do something to let the man know they are sorry.

Gloria Walker April 9, 2017 at 6:14 pm

Thank you, so much for that Ericka! There need to be more people like you with such an caring heart. Food Lion need to train their employees a little better than that! Little do they know that makes their business look very bad, because people acting like that you hire that says alot about your store managers also, where were they during this incident? God Bless You Ericka Keen!

KELVIN D. BALTHROP January 20, 2017 at 11:45 pm

Store: 00601
Register: 004
Cashier : 0229
Ticket : 0395 & 0393
20 Jan 2017
Time: 22:01:44 and 22:09:28

Standing at the register getting checked out, which I made two transactions due to me wanting cash back with no ATM Fee. I requested $180.00 Cash back, not knowing the cashier had just received a register drop from the CSM, we had to wait until she brought him cash. I could see the security officer keep peeking over as if something was wrong or I was stealing. I stated it to the cashier and we both laughed and waited on the CSM to bring the requested funds. She arrived counted the funds twice behind herself as protocol requires and handed me the 1st requested $180.00 Cash back. I started to ring up my second order and I notice the security guard gets closer and peeking over even more. So I asked is there a problem. He stated No. The cashier continued to ring my second order up. Once again the security comes over and pulls up a cart and acts as if he was going to put my items in the basket, me basically feeling rushed by him, I stats to him, I’m ok! I do not need your help. The CSM is still there witnessing harassment by the security. I asked him can he get from around me we will be done very soon. He began to go on a rant stating “store is close, I need to hurry up, just get it!”, From then my temper spiked and I stated, you need to just stand over there and do your job as you do every night I see you when I come in here and mind your business. From there, he begins to go on a rant again calling me didn’t types of homophobic slurs and curse words that were just not right for a everyday customer who knows everybody that work there including management. The management and team members just stood there and watched me being harassed called out my name and basically escorted to the door without saying anything or at least trying to stop him or make him stop! As he’s escorting me out he’s still ranting calling me homophobic slurs and me being in fear of him losing control. I immediately called the Henrico Police. The security continued to walk back and forth outside taunting me as I waited for the police. The times he escorted out employees, he would wait until they got into their car and stand their and stat, “F-Boy”. I wasn’t rude, I didn’t curse him. I simply stood beside my car making videos and taking pictures patiently waiting for the police to arrive. Once police got there, I told them my sorry to the officer, and they stated No harm was done so I would have to leave before they say I’m trespassing, which I can understand! But what I don’t understand is how can management stand around and watch a everyday, well every night, customer be harassed by their security. Every moment is video recorded in the front of the store. I feel embarrassed and unsafe to even shop at any Foodlion store now. This is not the first time, but it’s the second and last time. I live in this community and even worked there in my childhood days. I’ve seen the violence increase within that area so I only started picking up quick items from there just to make it fast. Then I found out they got security and I felt a little better. Now the security is not safe!! This IS A BIG PROBLEM AND I NEED ANSWERS TO WHY THE MANAGEMENT ALLOWED SECURITY TO CALL ME HOMOPHOBIC SLURS, CURSE ME AND HARASS ME OUT THE STORE WITH OUT SPEAKING ONE WORD BUT LAUGH LIKE EVERYTHING IS OK?I’M GOING PUBLIC/SOCIAL MEDIA WITH THIS SITUATION…. This is just wrong😞😞😞

Beyond teathered. I lost a day in a half of work because 2 cashiers at the 4848 VA BCH Blvd location one named Brenda who Failed to check for signature on credit cards and bank cards which would have indicated SEE ID. When the cards started to decline it didnt seem to phase Brenda. In fact she swiped an MVP card for the 650.00 worth of Footlocker gift cards. Come on 11 times my credit and bank cards! I was notified by my banks fruad dept of the very unusual activity. I arrived at the location minutes after the last transaction. I was told by a 30 yr Mgr that because it was ebt time of month that the cashier wasn’t alarmed or phased. Seriously!! I would not be posting this comment of major frustration had the cashier been more proactive, responsive or slightly engaged with with her task at hand. We won’t going into just basic cashier 101 of policy and procedure that is practiced throughout retailers! I have worked in retail in all positions in retail for 15yrs. This is unacceptable and a police report has been filed and there will be more to come on this case! Maybe Food Lion doesn’t care about losing money?

Ellisha January 18, 2017 at 12:18 am

I worked at Food Lion for 4 years in Eldersburg and they had a policy that Third Party and Prepaid cards must be handled at Customer Service. That cashier wasn’t trained properly and its a shame that the manager didn’t take responsibility for at least that. What does EBT have to do with Credit Cards and Debit Cards. They are not the same thing in Maryland don’t know about Virginia. Sorry for your inconvenience I hope the Manager accommodated you with some gift cards.

I am currently an enmployee at store 003. I have worked here for over three years and bent over backwards for this company. I have worked over 12 days straight, I have worked 15+ hour shift multiple times and currently I average 10 hours every shift. I have worked over night becuase no manger wants to stay for remodels and floor strips. I have been managing the grocery department the best I can from the mess the assistant manager makes of it. I make sure the store gets the best close possible, and it gets the best close when I am there. I have been in my position for a little under 2 years and I have been offered no oppurtunity to move up. When the grocery manager position at my store came open my management didn’t even consider me. They gave me a meeting to tell me why they didn’t want to give it to me they’re reason being I hadn’t been trained in all I need to know, but it is their job to train me and get me ready for the next move. Yet when the person they hired statered he could barely run back stock and his floats are sloppy, every order review has been ridiculous and the assitant manager is still basically running the grocery dept. On top of that he is coming from outside the company and hasn’t worked with food lion for awhile. This person professional attire is sloppy and baggy also. He has been following mangers around so they can train him for the past weeks, so my question is how is this any different than having to train me. It is the opinion and whispers of many in the store that I did not receive the position becuase of my race and I hate to say I feel that also. The demographics of the store have changed dramatically and many of the positions previously held by those of color have ended up whitewashed from the front end to the dairy dept. Upon arriving at my store one of the first things said by the current store manager is that the front end was “very ethnic” and he was convinced that his employees where on drugs even tho he had no evidence of such. They’re have been many off color remarks made by the management team to many people full of stereotypes and ignorance have tried to ignore the prejudice but I can’t stand to watch someone get the job I have broken my back and worked for simply becuase I don’t have the right skin hue. My family has ties with the NAACP and they have promised to look into this matter with me and help guide me in the right direction to retribution. They have already found cases of discrimination within the highest levels of food lion buried becuase of foodlions deep pockets so my case is not a first. But with the NAACP and the lawyers they have recommended I believe the outcome of this will be a first

I just baked my 4th loaf of bread in my bread maker that did not rise. Finally I checked the date on the Foodlion bread maker yeast, and it expired in Aug 2016, I bought it in October 2016. Im am really upset, cost me a lot of money to make these 4 flops. Think I will shop some where else. This happened in Rutherfordton, NC store.

I have been a loyal employee at my store. Shortly after I was hired there was an incident that occured involving my family member who recently started working there. Although I had no involvement and supported their action against her and was not there when it happened it casted a dark shadow over me. I’ve been at my store almost two years and I’ve never received a raise. I have some medical problems that I was honest with them about and for that I was put on medical leave for three months for no reason. While I was away they hired a boy with no experience and pay him $1 more than me. Everyone in the store knows how hard I work and notice that he doesn’t make the same effort and leaves early every night while I’m working over. I’m a single parent of a 4year old and he has no kids and still lives at home with his parents while I’m struggling to keep my bills paid. I feel so disrespected and hurt that my manager would do that after denying me my 1 year raise only a week and a half before I went on leave. I have brought up my concerns to my superiors every chance I got and nothing’s being done about it. I like where I work and I’d like to see it succeed, why don’t they want the same for me? :'(

Disrespected Employee August 17, 2019 at 12:14 pm

The breaks are horrible! I’ve worked for other companies where if you worked 6hrs or more, you get one 30min break and two 15min breaks. Slavery at it’s finest.

Dodge November 24, 2016 at 1:19 pm

To corporate, I am currently an employee with a foodlion store which I transferred to. My old store was the best store at making sure their employees had their breaks at a reasonable time. My new store gives no care and waits till last minute to send people on breaks especially ones who are pregnant and in my opinion corporate needs to come in and speak with this store located at 0349 piney green shopping center in Jacksonville NC.

I have been a Food Lion customer for many years, in fact I shopped at Food Lion Stores with parents as a child. I shop at Food Lion Stores three to five times a week. I buy my groceries, baby products(diapers, baby formula, baby wipes, baby food, etc.), my cleaning products and anything else that my family may need at the Food Lion Store located on Talbert Blvd. in Lexington, NC. Seven weeks ago, I was in that particular Food Lion with my mother in law. While we were shopping in the produce section, I walked past the fresh flowers and slipped in a puddle of water. There was no wet floor sign in place. I was assisted by another customer off of the floor. I was so embarrassed and shocked by what had occurred. The customer who helped me up notified the young man who was working in the produce section and I quickly paid for my items and left. On the way home, my mother in law brought it to my attention that even though I was okay at the moment, what if I were to go into preterm labor(at the time I was 24 weeks pregnant) or something worse happened overnight or in the following days and that I should have talked to the store manager. As soon as I got home, I called the store and spoke with Adam, the store manager that was on duty, he asked for me to come back in to the store and fill out an incident report. So I went back and gave him my information. A few days later I was contacted by risk management representative Brittany Brinney. When I spoke with her, she asked what happened to me in the store and I told her. She assured me that she would be back in touch with me in the coming weeks. I contacted her on several occasions(I always had to leave a message) to update her with my contact information that had changed and so forth. I finally received a return phone call from her yesterday on 9-6-2016 where she stated that after reviewing the video and speaking with the employees at the store and even if my unborn child or myself was hurt that Food Lion would not be responsible for any of my injuries and that it was my own fault for not seeing this puddle of water and that if I didn’t see it why did I feel that the employee should have seen it. She was less than compassionate and not at all apologetic that I had fallen in a Food Lion Store. I was deeply upset that I did not even receive an apology from the store manager, the produce employee or Brittany Brinney(risk management representative). Even in the last seven weeks after my fall, I continued to be a loyal Food Lion customer. I have still purchased all of my groceries and other needs from that store. I am hurt by the lack of compassion that I received from the people who are representing Food Lion and I am sad to say that because of these events and the way I was treated by the people handling this matter, I am not sure that I even feel comfortable shopping at Food Lion any longer. If I could suggest that there be more training as far as handling a customer who has had an incident in a Food Lion Store(i.e. by not making the customer feel as if it is their fault). Also, if there could be more floor checks as this incident could have caused more damage than it did. I can only hope that someone at Food Lion can read this and make a difference for someone else who may have the same issue and hopefully they are not pregnant.

Geneva Nelson September 1, 2016 at 4:27 pm

To whom this may concern:
This is one of the worst experience I have had in my 63 years of living. It has been ten years since i’ve moved back to SC from Bronx N.Y. At least twice a week I would shop at Food Lion
stores, I moved to this area on Ladson Rd. for over four years now, Its very convenient for me, Low and Behold, I went to the Store location at 3786 Ladson Road on Monday afternoon, wanted to cook a special Dinner for my Daughter that was coming to Charleston that evening, When I got through shopping, I proceeded to go checkout, and this young white cashier met me and said I”ll take you, I said ok ,but needed to get some
rug doctor cleaner which my Husband called me while I was at the store to get that item, I missed his call, and did have to get my cell phone out of my pocket book, A Michael Kors
Bag as a matter of fact, which is not illegal to go in and out of my bag, I do it all the time.
often times I have to search for my phone somewhere in my bag, So when I got to this Cashiers Register, He started ringing me up, half way through , I gave this guy my foodlion card, He took it and then said to me, let me see your bag, I opened my bag, then it darned on me that this guy is assuming that I stole something, I was in shock being that I;m a regular customer, and always had a good repore with everyone in this store, I then asked him in my high pitch voice you think I stole something, He didnt answer me, I asked for the Manager., someone pointed him out and I went to him to tell him what just happened, I let him know that I was Appalled, Embarrassed, and so on, He proceeded to Apologize, and said he think the cashier meant to ask me for my card, I said No, because I had already given him my card, He went over to that cashier and said to him, Did you mean to ask her for her card, to me he was trying to put words in this guys mouth, which the young man never did answer, I think he was terrified and I believe this was already a setup because every worker including the Manager was in front of the store as if waiting
for me, I think the Big Dogs pushes up the little dogs to do the dirty work, so I dont blame that Cashier be cause he was only doing what he was told to do, The Cashier continued to ring up my stuff, I told them all, I dont want this stuff, all these stores out here i can go to and i left and went to Bi-Lo and sat in their parking lot still feeling very hurt, I decided to call FoodLion again and asked for the Managers name which is Mr. Tyrell Mc Pherson and the Cashiers name which i was told Jesse, so I asked to speak to Mr. McPherson, and told him again how i was feeling, He was again Apologetic and said for me to come back to the store, and I said ,What are you going to do for me, He said I could everything
I wanted for free, I just sat out in front of Bi-Lo for a few minutes, then not to go back to your Store. Its hard to undo what was already done, It left a really bad taste in my mouth. Mr. McPherson told me that a Customer said they saw me put something in my bag, as i said earlier it was my cell phone, its sad to lose such a valuable Customer because of foolishness, I told Mr. McPherson several times that every black person that come in to shop is not a thief. The sad thing is that my Husband Cancer came back and Iam constantly taking him to MUSC , at least twice a week, so I already have my plate full, so I really didn;t need this extra, besides I worked at New York Company for 25yrs plus, and my husband retired from United States Postal Svce for 40 plus yrs. I did ask my Pastor- Rev. Nelson B. Rivers 111. what should i do. He is a big part of NAACP, and also works with Rev. Sharpton with the National Action Network, He advised me to write up a complaint on Food Lion’s Website and at the Store Location, They told me they dont
have a complaint form at the Store Location. I just think you need to Train or Retrain your Workers to be very very sure when they Falsely accuse someone that is innocent.

Food Lion in Garner NC on 5th Ave is a joke. My daughter had been working there since June of this year. I had to pick her up today because they falsely accused her of stealing when she was given a “On Me Sticker” to get something to eat 3 months ago. I asked to see the surveillance footage of her stealing and they stated they could not show it to me. My child’s story never changed that she was given the sticker by an employee and they stated it was for an item of her choosing. I am confused how you can fire someone 3 months later for a situation and then can’t show the evidence to prove your accusation. I am one of those parents that if you are wrong I believe in disciplining the child but if they are right I am going to go to back for them. I believe my child when she stated she did not steal, she enjoyed working there even with the rudeness and attitudes of fellow employees. She enjoy interaction with the customers. This location is filled with rude and racist employees and has been since I started shopping here in 2013. The Store managers are rude and they have perverted male employees that will stare and make sexist comments towards women that come in and out of the store. My daughter has never been accused of stealing from any of the previous 5 jobs she has held over the past 5 years. She has always been commended for her excellent customer service skills and her professionalism. I was called to pick her up by a Loss Prevention Agent who called me being rude and spoke to me like I was retarded when I came to the store to pick her up. I called the corporate office in Salisbury NC and everyone there acted as if the didn’t know who the store’s General Manager was. I will not shop at any of their locations ever again! Monthly I spend at least 600 in CASH on food and personal items since 2013. They will have “Smooth”(a store manager) follow you around the store like you are going to steal something. Then you have the other managers and employees that are more worried about their weave, make-up and false eyelashes that it annoys them to help you locate one item. I am going to post this on the BBB website and Facebook. Food Lion does not care about what goes on in their facilities or how their Managers treat their employees. The disrespect and humiliation they showed my child today was disgraceful. If they only wanted her to work the summer they could have made that known from the beginning and not falsely accuse her of stealing in order to let her go!

I fell, due to no fault of my own, in my local Food Lion store on August 1st and have not spoken to anyone from the company as of today, Aug. 10th even though I filed an incident report at the store. Wouldn’t someone care to know how I’m doing…..or if I was injured in the fall?? APPARANTLY NOT!!!

brittany salmon September 7, 2016 at 4:49 pm

Hi Brenda,
I also fell in a Food Lion Store. They had no wet floor sign and I was 24 weeks pregnant at the time(I am currently 31 weeks pregnant, Thank the Lord that I didn’t hurt my unborn child at the time of my fall). I was originally contacted by risk management representative Brittany Brinney from the corporate office in Salisbury, N.C. 3 days after my incident. I tried contacting her numerous times over a 7 weeks period and she finally returned my call stating to me that she had interviewed the employee working in that department that was notified after my fall(he was only a few feet away from me), the store manager who took the incident report and she had also reviewed the video, She told me that it was my own fault that I did not see the puddle of water and that Food Lion would not be responsible for my unborn child’s injuries or my injuries! I asked her for a copy of the report and was told that it was property of Food Lion and that I would need a court order. So, any dealings that you have with them, keep your own record of them! Record phone calls, write everything down and contact an attorney!

Today I went to Food Lion in Franklin to get 3 things. I will NEVER return. There were two people ahead of me when I got in the line. The first woman checked out, then the clerk told her she could make other transactions without buying anything. So the woman then started getting cash. Twice! and took like 5 minutes each of those transactions because she could not decide how much she wanted. Then the woman in front of me invited the woman from BEHIND me to jump line. The clerk saw all of this and said nothing. I’m partially paralyzed on my left side and can barely walk or stand for very long, thats why I was in the express lane to get in and out quickly. So that woman got checked out, then the woman who invited the lady to jump ahead of me started checking out, it took forever as she first did not want some ribs, then did want them so twice as many transactions again because at first she did not want some ribs, then after she got rung up, she decided she wanted the ribs. Then she had to pay cash which she could not find the exact correct change, I’m waiting calmly. THEN, when it was my turn finally, the clerk bagged my pizzas in a torn bag that was slit bad all the way up one side, she saw this and tossed the bag into my cart. . I had to ask to rebag. Now I would not have minded if the lady had let the woman jump line ahead of herself if she had been in front of me, but since when is it right to invite people to go to the front off the line in front of others that are waiting their due turn?? Why did this happen? Was it just a coincidence I was the only white person in that line? Maybe, I’m just making an observation. Do I need to get a handicap plate to wear around my neck, ? Would it have mattered? I’m pissed off so bad I see blood.

Why did food lion stop carrying Mr. B’s bisciuts when they remodeled the Lancaster SC store?

I shop at the foodlion on st.Patrick’s drive .some of the workers are nice but the manager of the store he is rude as can be .he is very rude to some of his employees mostly the white ones he needs to learn how to talk to people.I have seen some of the employees ask him a question he just blows them off .he is always on his phone .

On Friday june 10, 2016 I requested food lion to wire $450.00 to my bank account with Capitalone 360 Banking. The money was instead wired to Capital Bank, the wrong bank. I requested food lion to refund my money as admitted by them the error was made by them. They informed me that I would have to wait on western union. This food lion is located at 2208 golden gate drive, Greensboro,nc. I feel that they should return my money immediately. Bernell Neal

I am a regular shopper at the Food Lion at Oak Avenue Mall in Kannapolis…I am APPALLED at the sight of the parking lot…WHY in H*LL did you cut down the trees???? It makes the parking lotlook shabby…I enjoyed those trees…I guess I ill now go elsehere to buy my groceries,,which I spend over $300.00 a month..I know this will not hurt your business and I hope you receive more Flak about it. What ere you thinking? Apparently you weren’t. Don’t fool yourself by thinking just because the inside was remodeled you had to cut down the trees…

I think it is time for Foodlion to really take a good look at who they putting in Office positions in their stores. I believe in leading your workers by example. The Foodlion in Mt Airy, NC located on 52 really needs some changes in their Office Staffing. The Check out area is a joke. Their are only a few of the cashiers that act professional, the others are all playing around including the younger Office Staff when the front Office Manager is not there. It seems to have a better staff on the earlier shift. This store needs better training for its younger employees.

Yesterday I visited my local food lion and got a coupon for the Sounds of Sizzle promotion. The store employees had not seen this before and the attendant called several over to look at it. I came home, went to the site and entered the code. The only response I get back is invalid code. Is that normal? If so, you need to make sure it’s printed on there somewhere, as I did not see it.

Love food lion.

I’ve been a Walmart customer for a very long time, under the impression they had the best prices in town. But, since my daughter-in-law turned me onto Food Lion, this is the only place I shop. The prices are great as the selections. The store is always well stocked, and the employees are always so friendly and helpful. I’m in a wheelchair, and the employees being so helpful and nice means a great deal to me. But, yesterday, between 1 and 2:30 I had some things I needed to pick up. There was a lady leaving the store outside, and she let me have one of your smaller carts. Usually I’m able to push the cart alone with one hand, and maneuver my wheelchair with the other. But, it’s difficult on the incline of the parking lot at the entrance. I asked a guy leaving the store if he could help me, and to my amazement, he looked at me then looked at the cart guy wheeling in about 20 carts. He came at me with, “I was just leaving, I’m getting off”. Since the cart guy couldn’t just stop in the doorway, this employee went ahead and took the cart across the incline. I said thank you, but he made no response. Then in the store I got the same reaction from a guy who looked like a representative. All I asked him was he able to get 4 Mento candy rolls from a register candy shelf. He got the candy, but left in such a huff that just wasn’t necessary I felt. I’ll continue shopping at Food Lion, but I hope to never run into these two men ever again.

We were just in the foodlion store on wimchester ave in martinsburg wv. There is a check out man there that has recently became transgender. I have no problem with this…to each their own. But he tries his best now to make people uneasy. I was in his line today and he asked my “why do you look like you feel so uncmfortable” i wasnt feeling uncomfrtable until he said that and then i felt under attack. My wife also has been in there (another time) and he was working on the express lane and she had to many items so she went to the next register. He said “i am open unless there is a reason you dont want to come into my lane” she responded “no there is no reason except having to many items for the express lane” it embarrased us and we felt called out for no reason. It has actually made us use the other foodlion on court house square more frequently just because now we do feel uncomfortable. Not due to his gender association but because of his attitude.

I’ve been shopping at the same food lion for 26 years – store# 2518, in Lake Ridge, VA, until yesterday. It’s the second time I’ve encountered this totally rude, obnoxious, condescending employee, working the dairy section. Both times were similar: he was stocking the milk section, so was blocking the holf & half that I needed to get to. Both times, I stood there for a bit; he was TOTALLY aware that I needed something there, and just kept doing his thing. Then I said “excuse me, but…” then SLOWLY walks away, doesn’t say a word. Yesterday I asked hin if he could hand me a half & half, not only did he totally ignore me, but this time when he stepped aside, he started making little taunting noises with his mouth. He was TRYING SO HARD to get a reaction from me; this guy totally wanted a confrontation, but I said nothing. He kept it up while I walked away. This person obviously has an agenda against White people. He makes it SO OBVIOUS. I asked for the manager and was told he was in a meeting. When I got home I called 2 different times, and the people I spoke to could barely speak English. So I never did speak with a manager. I tossed my FL card in the trash; I will NEVER EVEN AGAIN step foot in; nor spend one penny in ANY FL.
This second (and final) incident occurred at 2:15PM, Tuesday, April 12.
I have MANY other shopping options – and I will go elsewhere from now on. I dont need to spend my money at a place that has rude, racist employees that give major attitudes to customers.

I made a purchase on March 22,2016. My receipt printed out Congratulation you are qualified to receive a Make Every Basket Count game code. Didn’t receive one from cashier. Reciept read if did not receive from cashier Please visit Food Make A Basket Count Good Lucky”. You want believe this but game expired that same night. There wasn’t an expiration date on game receipt. I believe it was a FRAUD ,RIP OFF, someone lying, just don’t want to be honest and give me my prize which is WRONG.

I attempted to send a email on your web form but it would not send.

I would like to run a story by you about a visit to the Lewes, Delaware store this afternoon:

Customer Number 46146164462
Cashier: Aswan
Ticket Number 0317
10FEB2016 16:58:48

I live in Frankford, Delaware. Today I was in Lewes, Delaware for a doctors appointment and decided to stop by the Lewes store to pick up a few things for dinner. I usually shop at the Millsboro, Delaware store on DuPont highway but thought I might as well stop at the Lewes store as I was driving right past.

When I checked out Aswan seemed less than interested in checking me out. He was working the express lane which I used as I only had 9 items.

I drive back to Frankford, unload the groceries, put the cold stuff away and start my dinner. Guess what folks, I cooked my burger, go into the bag my non frozen items were in and guess what, No NPLC Organic Ketchup. You will see it when you look at the receipt. It was not I that did not pick up the bag from the counter. Aswan actually begrudgingly handed them to me.

What was I going to do?, take the time to make a 56 mile round trip back to the store to get a $2.59 item. You tell me. I may be from Lower Delaware but I didn’t just fall off the chicken truck. This same thing happened to me at the Selbyville, Delaware store about 2 months ago. I didn’t go back that time either. They here all kinds of cons and I was not going to risk they would think I was conning them. Once bitten, twice shy.

The next time I was in Millsboro I could stop by the DuPont Blvd store and talk to David or Rusty and likely get a replacement. I think they would believe me when I told them I did not get the item but I would be uncomfortable presenting that to them. I have had, in the past, had a pretty good relationship with them both. Even though I will not be back I will not ruin that trust.

You know what…..Food Lion is a big company but so was Circuit City and Lehman Brothers. When something good happens to you, you tell one or two people. When something bad happens you tell 10. I don’t do that. What happens to me is my private business. I am not the only one that does not raise a fuss. We just g somewhere else. I will now go to Harris Teeter and Giant even though it is a 6 mile longer drive.

Two closing comments. Is Aswan does not want the job there are hundreds of other people that do, and if you do take a job then do the best, and make the best of it. If you cannot do either of those then leave.

I’m very disgusted at the false advertisement I saw at store #0143. They had two end cap freezer sections marked as five for five with a variety of things in it. ( DiGiorno Pizza, pot pie, toaster strugles, biscuit etc) I asked the grocery manager Sam and he told me that the sale is actually for tomorrow. (Wed feb 10, 2016) But that they just have it up today.(Tuesday feb 9,2016 @5:15pm) I told him well I want the five for five. He said that he can’t give me the five for five. I explain to him that if the sign says five or five then I as the customer would like what is advertised. He said he couldn’t do that. I asked was there anyone I could speak to and he gives me the customer service number. I am very upset that this lead no where. The customer service lady who assisted me inform me that calling here would only just make a note in the system, and that they were unable to make decisions like that. I took pictures of what was advertised. And I think I will be reporting this matter to a higher official. Attached is the picture:

On Wednesday morning after work I stop by food lion on dumfries road to buy some items as I always do everyday, after paying for the items, I left my wallet on the counter and came back after five minutes and it was gone, the funny thing is the cashier whom I suspect took my wallet gave me back the tomatoes I left I left behind but not my wallet with money and cards, I asked the supervisor to review the camera but she refused to let me see which means the cashier and the supervisor stole my wallet with my money and cards which happened on the 13th of January 2016. If food lion will hire thieves to work on their companies it means the company will lose a lot of customers as it does not look good on the image of the campany. Thanks cashier was a white lady and the supervisor black, please let the cooperate investigate this issue and know the truth for themselves as my family’s will never shop at this store anymore. Thanks.

Hi, new employee getting b.s. from your “management team”. (Mariottsville Rd location in Randallstown Md) Firstly, finishing out my first two weeks left me with a bitter taste. Aside from all of the games being played by management, and the nasty attitude of a grocer that is continuously coddled by the superiors with no action taken upon confrontation, I arrive to work on a scheduled day only to be sent home with no provocation. No call ahead, no email. I was scheduled in black and white. I am seeking compensation for my time loss for the 8 hour shift due to me for that day. I will also be contacting the BBB as wll as the Labor board.

With all the hoopla about being “politically correct” may I ask why it is O.K. To promote a beer called “Sweet Baby Jesus”? And not having a beer called “Mohommeds Malt”, “Jewish Juice”, “Baptist Brew”, “Catholic CoolOne”, etc.? Just wondering…

10 Sam’s Point Road
Beaufort S.C. 29907

I’m a Quality Assurance at this store for over a year now. When I first started I was so hopeful, cheerful and customers were happy too. I think of my co-workers as my family cause we help each other out. Even customers have noticed this and said that was great way to work. We were able to joke with each other, help each other out and always make sure everyone was ok. My job as a qa I always finish early. I scrub the grout in the bathrooms, wipe down the walls and other things besides what’s on the list. But I get my stuff done every time so I help other departments out too. Ever since we got our new manager Willie the store has gone to complete hell. He is constantly on his cell phone whether it’s talking or texting. He tells the front end cashiers not to call him up front unless its for money or returns/refunds. If you try to talk to him about something he pulls out his cell phone. We need someone who is concerned about the store, employees and will listen when you have a concern. No one feels comfortable talking to him. There’s one manager in the store that everyone goes to cause he will listen and not mess with his phone. That is Gary. He does more than any of the managers combined. He stocks, does break down, is up front in less then a minute if he’s called and this guy never gets a proper lunch break because produce and deli need him to check before they leave. There’s hours being taken away that was already scheduled. Employees are getting treated poorly. The stickers work their butts off and yet they aren’t doing their best. I’m not even allowed to talk or joke with any of my co-workers anymore. I get lectured when I help other departments now. The customers have noticed too. We have lost a few regulars over this. It has become miserable to work here anymore.

I shop at Food Lion at Carolina Beach. I tried to send this today and your email on the customer service site is not working, therefore, I am trying this.

Deceptive Advertising

Today I was in the shopping center and I saw the large outdoor advertisement that read “ Turkey’s .37 per pound. Minimum purchase $35.00

I thought great I have to buy a tobacco product for my husband so I may as well get my turkey at the same time. But I get up to the checkout and I am told
tobacco products are excluded from the minimum. I explained to the cashier “ Malory” that your sign posted out front did not say anything was excluded. Just that you had to purchase $35.00, which I was doing.
to say the least I did not buy the turkey, it would have been $26 compared to $5 advertised.

If there is an exclusion, then all signage posted for the consumer should be clearly stated that there is indeed an exclusion as to what may or may not apply. She explained that is was in the circular, but I was not shopping with a circular, I was going by the signage on the outside entrance.

Please in the future make sure this is clear anywhere you have a price and minimum purchase listed.

Thank you

My complaint is about the Food Lion, manager Mark Toller and grocery manager Matt Berk. I went into the store to purchase a money order for my company. The time was aprx. 5:20 pm. I stood at the customer service desk for 15 min. waiting for someone to help me. These two men were standing just to the right of the customer service counter the entire time. Neither one of them said a word to me. Looking down the row of cash registers I could see a lady with a white shirt on; and thought she would be the one to be at the customer service desk. When she left her register she stopped and talked to one then two then three cashiers NOT CUSTOMERS. That is when I went to the two men and asked if they were management and expressed an on going pattern at this store with no concern about customers at the counter. Marks response was,”All you have to do is ask.” No I strongly disagree, when you have two managers there with in arms reach a customer should not have to ask. His smart dirogitory remarke showed how ingnorate he is concerning your customers. I walked away to the counter were the lady was going to help me. He continued with his smart remarks. When I raised my voice to him and told him I was egnoring him; he threatened me with, “I will call the police. You will not raise your voice in my store.” He did not know when to leave well enough allone. I go into this location any where from 2 to 6 times a week. I purchase money orders then do my shopping. Each time I wait at the customer service counter an average of 12 to 25 min. Yes this was the straw that broke the camels back. With managers standing right there and not a word. No Hello! May I help you? or Someone will be right with you. To be told I have to ask for help??!! Maybe I should call and make a reservation. Food Lion the new Walmart of grocery stores.

First, let me highly compliment Food Lion on its relatively new store in Daleville, Virginia. It’s not just classy and clean, the staff is well-trained and very helpful.
I’d like to add a note to Mr. Keith Gehl, Executive Vice President of Business Strategy and Store Development.
Not far up the road (Rte. 220, about 35 miles north) is the town of Clifton Forge. I own a 20 acre parcel of land at the intersection of Rte. 220 N and Route 60, the highest traffic site in the region. I am looking for an anchor store for that site and have a unique plan to assist a company like Food Lion to locate there inexpensively. All utilities including fibr optic cable, water, sewer, 3 phase power etc. are available. (There is a Food Lion store in nearby Covington, Virginia. The Kroger, which used to be located next door to this, closed a couple of years ago. Now, that traffic comes to its Clifton Forge location, just 3/8 of a mile away.) All I’m asking for is the opportunity to come to Salisbury, NC to make a 10-15 minute presentation of the facts of this market, the appropriate traffic stats and more. Sorry, I just cannot find Mr. Gehl’s email address online. My phone number is 540-460-XXXXX.

I would like to make a complaint about the Cashier Corrine. Last evening, my friend and I shopped in the Food Lion store and got a very embarrassing experience. When I paid with a Food Lion $10 coupon, the cashier Corrine was very rude and told me that many people had used that kind of coupons and that she needed to check with the manager about it. My question is that why she allows “many” people other than me to use the coupon. The manager came and approved my coupon. However, Corrine was still very unhappy and showed a mean face to me. My friend was the next one in the line after me. During waiting for me to checkout, my friend went to pick up a few more stuff . Corrine saw my friend left and told me that my coupon could not be used for the next transaction. I told Corrine, my friend had her own coupons and will come back in a minute. Corrine put my friends’ merchandise all into the table behind herself and defied my request to wait and called the next customer. My friend brought her stuff right back and waited with me for over 10 minutes while Corrine went to check for the potato price for another customer. There were only very few customers in the line at that time (8:30pm). I had to suggest my friend to pick up her grocery from the shelves again, since most of her unpaid merchandise was hold at Corrine’s checkout place. I also suggested my friend to try a different cashier. I did not make any complaints to the manager at that time right in front of my friend. After all, I just invited her to shop with me in the Food Lion. But I have to say that the cashier Corrine was too rude.
For your record: the ticket#: 0366, Register:008, Cashier:0205, date:25Aug2015, store:02215
MVP card #: 461261403281
Thanks for your time!

I want to let you know that management controls their employees through punishment by cutting their hours as a group. I only shop at this store because I had a child who works there. As I see the crappy way the employees, some of whom have families, are treated, I seriously consider NOT shopping there any further. I have listened to this happen with multiple employees, some current, some past. They are all experiencing this. This is not okay. I want to spend my money where it goes back into the community by way of the families. I want to shop at a store where the people are happy and well treated. I want my children treated fairly and respectfully. I do not want to give my money to people who treat people as though they don’t matter. This is a small town and word gets around. I work in a school where I meet and speak with families. We are military. We have children in sports. Anytime I can work it in, I am going to tell everyone involved how you treat the people in our community! Shame, shame on you abusers! Nobody can plan a life when they have no idea what kind of mood management is in and whether or not they are going to have enough money to live the next month! I don’t see management’s hours being cut! Only the people they can get away with abusing. Shame!

I tried the online complaint process and it is a dead link. I sent this and it never said it was sent! Sham! They don’t even care what people think!

I just started working for food lion about 2 months ago and they are impossible to work for. I turned down a 2nd job with the promise of more hours. I’ve yet to make a check over $300 and I get paid more than minimum wage. They also do not accept dr notes. I was just diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis, sinus infection, and double ear infection with fluid in my ears. I almost got sent to the hospital for high fever and was contagious. Even though the doctor strictly said for me not to work the day after they told me I had no choice unless I wanted to be put on a final notice. I WAS CONTAGIOUS AND FACE TO FACE WITH CUSTOMERS! I went in and worked as long as I could, then left (got my shift covered keep in mind) and today when I returned to work they are threatening me and chewing my head off. They said I should not have come in at all that it just made it worse on them and that I was still being put on a final anyway. Last time I checked employers loved when you showed that you wanted to work and actually tried. So why did I even go in? I am so fed up but I have to have some type of income to finish college. I am sick of the way I am treated. It feels like everyone is out to attack you!

I am so tired of going into Food Lion to have to wait for a cashier to put her/his cell phone down to check out. Today it was in Sanford, NC Store # 1349 cashier 0137 on her Facebook. REALLY PEOPLE? Is this what you get paid to do? Did your parents not teach you any better if your boss did not. I am posting this here because I want Corporate to see where their $$ is going. I so am spending my $ at Kroger in Apex. Tired of this store and lack of training staff and staying on top of it when it comes to “the customers come first. ” I will follow up with many letters to the right persons but this rude and stealing behavior has to stop. Yes stealing, if you are on the clock and on your Facebook or carrying on a conversation with other staffers, of your night before events not working, you are stealing.

Recently purchased two packages of hamburger at your Mt. Olive, Nc location on Brezeale Avenue. Got home to realize the meat had expired two days previously. It smelled terrible. I took photos of my receipt, and the packages for proof. You store should NOT be selling expired meat. Somebody is going to get sick. How does that not violate FDA health codes? I don’t feel comfortable shopping at Food Lion if your products are going to make my family sick.

Hey I just found out that you have to be 85 to get a 1% discount. So they can keep there 1% percent discount, that is really crazy if you want my opinion on this just saying

I worked for Food Lion for a week! It was the most horrible experience I have ever had to deal with concerning an employer. I received that horrible job a week before final exams and graduation. I remember telling the manager during the interview that this was my last week of school; however, when the store tried to reach me, he had [convenient amnesia]! It has been a month and four days and I still have not received my check. And to make matters worst, dealing with Home Office(Salisbury, NC) is like pulling baby-teeth, one lie after another. Oh yeah, by the way, Tim, Dee, and the rest of the idiots who work in payroll, you don’t like my conversation because I am not stupid! I think all of you are about as dumb as a bag of rocks!! How is it that mail can’t get from home office(Salisbury, NC) to Winston-Salem, NC……and it is only 45 mins away?

Yesterday (May 3, 2015) I stopped by Food Lion to pick-up a few items to supplement our needs until regular grocery shopping day.

One of our favorite items that Food Lion has to offer has been your house brand of Hazelnut Coffee Creamer. We have been using exclusively this product for the past 6 or 7 years. I noticed the new packaging right away, and this morning I have noticed another change. The taste.

Your creamer has gone from a superior product to less than mediocre.

If you were to scan our MVP purchase habits, it would only take a moment to see that a boat-load of this product has been used at my house. Each morning I use precise measurements of coffee, water, sweetener, and creamer to achieve the taste that I look very much forward to each morning. The only thing different today is the creamer, and it is not good.

This move on your part to change your recipe or supplier, or both, for this product will now force me back into the marketplace to find a better than good product to use as your replacement.

In short, it is ruined. The outside packaging change is fine, but what matters, the stuff on the inside, did not need any refinement.

I have been shopping at Food Lion since it was Food Town and am very proud that Food Lion has been the source of quality products at fair prices, and offer both from my home state. Now I have to stray.

Sure wish you hadn’t messed with this outstanding product.

Well, I’m off to buy up several different brands to sample so I can once again enjoy my coffee tomorrow morning.

Have a SUPER day,
Ray Howard
1202 Town Side Drive

P.S. – Over time we have found your house brands to be equal to, or better than, the national brands on some/most items. If you are making a shift away from that stance, either on purpose or accidentally, it will not serve you well.

As a Mother of 3 little girls, and as a Citizen, as well as a loyal Customer, my husband and I have decided that an incident in your store needs to be brought to the attention of your corporate office.

As a mother intent on protecting my children to the fullest extent of my capabilities – I legally purchased a firearm with a permit from Wake County Sheriff office, as well as taking the Gun Safety Classes. I open carry everywhere it is legally allowed – tho I do fully respect the right for corporations to specify on their property.

As I was shopping on the Saturday evening (3/14/15) at 7:25p.m. I was stopped by an in uniform/off duty Durham City Officer (Kevin Williams) who was patrolling the Food Lion at 3500 Roxboro St. Durham N.C. 27704. At this time I was indeed Open Carrying.

Officer Williams approached me with a question of “Do you have a license or permit for that gun?”

I replied to him my rights and he proceeded to unsafely, unlawfully, remove my fire arm from my bodily person, with no legal standing, under no threat. (I am 5’8’’ female, 130lbs soaking wet) I offered no resistance.

Officer Williams told me he was going to run a serial number check on my legal side-arm. He “unloaded”, then set the gun down out of my reach and left it UNATTENDED – OUT OF HIS LINE OF SIGHT, OUT OF HIS OWN REACH – while chatting on his cell phone.

True – he had “disarmed” my side arm – but in my initial Gun Safety Course – even beginners are taught that “there is no such thing as an unloaded gun”. This is BASIC gun SAFETY.

After a few phone calls he told me that I was not allowed to have my gun back and that I would have to go downtown and fill out paper work to get it back.

Right then and there I called the Wake County Sheriffs department – who had issued my Permit To Purchase.

I told him who I called, and after I hung up I was told they would call me back. A moment later without reason he gives my gun back me.

HERE IS MY MAIN CONCERN: While RELOADING my side arm, and while handing me back my gun he carelessly points my gun in many unsafe directions (now while loaded). (This is in range of YOUR CUSTOMERS. Carelessly handling an UNKNOWN WEAPON in the vicinity of your customers and their children) His actions made me instantly nauseous with fear at the callous disregard. All I could think was “OMG he is going to HURT someone!!!”

He had in his hands a LOADED – UNKNOWN – weapon.

Does it have a “hair trigger?” HE DIDN’T KNOW. Is the Safety on? Did he even check? THIS is the behavior of an Off Duty Officer you have hired to protect (not endanger) your store!!!

I refused to take my gun from his hands and asked he put it back in my holster. He did. Then I was about to check out and he tells me I am not allowed to buy the 18 pack of beer until I put my gun in my car. (By law I am allowed to purchase alcohol but can not consume it while carrying).

Later that night the sheriff called me back and I told him about this evening and the sheriff said I was no where in the wrong and I should contact his commanding officer. I did so the next day. The commanding officer said he will speak with the officer that stopped me.

I am content with the response from the Commanding Officer – however – Food Lion needs to be aware of this incident. Normally – I would let it go at that.

In THIS case – an Officer who is ignorant of Gun Safety / or completely DISREGARDS the lives of your Customers and Employees, will not only get someone hurt but sued as well.
He violated my rights. (in your store)
He blatantly LIED about the legalities. (in your store)

He handled an unknown firearm in a manner as to a great possibility to hurt innocent bystanders (including myself). In your store.

Would Durham City be liable for any issues or injuries? Or would Food Lion?
I am not considering any legal action, I just think you need to be aware.

Thank you and have a great day.

I am totally disgusted with the Food Lion Meat Department. I purchased 2 packages of pre made hamburger meat a few days ago and when I got it home and opened it to cook it I almost vomited!! It was rancid!! Almost my entire house stunk!! The scary thing is that the sell date was 2 days away!! What if the smell wasn’t apparent yet and I cooked t his and serviced my family??? I have a diabetic son that it could have killed??? What is going on in the meat department there? How can meat be spoiled days in advance of the sell date?? From what I have read and heard, this is an ongoing problem. I think it’s about time that a lawsuit is brought against Food Lion. I will never shop there again!!!!!

Candice February 25, 2015 at 11:38 am

And I plan on escalation this to Meg Ham.

(STORE #1510)My wife and i have been loyal foodlion shoppers for years…we have a family of 5 (3 teenagers)…and spend a very substantial amount of money there. Today (2/23/15) we went there and spent nearly $200 on groceries, returned home to prepare dinner, opened the pork…to find it was rotten. After recovering from gagging…we then decided to prepare ground beef….opened it…low and behold it was brown and rotting on the inside. I called the store manager only to have him tell me “sometimes thats the risk you take”!!!!! (Really?)…..then it dawned on us…we had a winter storm yesterday and power was out locally for 4 hours, and the meat spoiled….and in the interest of profit im assuming…the spoiled meat was left out to be sold to dozens of clueless shoppers. We then went over to speak to our next door neighbor..who has been employed there for over a year…to discover from her that this is a routine practice. They get your money now….and fix the problem later IF you make a big deal about it! We are disgusted over the situation and will no longer be shopping at food lion any longer…there is a lowes foods less than a mile away which we will be doing ALL of our shopping at from now on!!! Profits should not interfere with the quality of food being sold! this was the second time that this has happened at this location…the first time it happened was last november with frozen pizza…the pepperoni was 3 different colors where it thawed out and was re-frozen!!! Thank u food lion for putting profits before people!!! I will follow this up by contacting every local agency i can!

I feel like I’m getting the run around with Food Lion….I’ve sent several emails with NO reply as of yet. I feel that Food Lion have NO concerns about they’re loyal customer.

The following email was sent twice – 1st time on 10/24 & 2nd time on 10/29.

I frequent your store weekly and never had any issues. However, last Sunday October 19, 2014 I was in the store and I had my kids with me as I went to pay for my order I placed my phone by the bags and paid for my order got my receipt and walked away as I got to my vehicle I notice I did not have my cell phone I turned around to go back into the store only to find my phone was missing. Ashley reviewed the video and saw a person placing something over my phone and when he left the store so did my phone. As of today your loss prevention person has FAILED to make contact with the police officer involved in my case. I find this to be very upsetting and feel that your employee does not value your loyal customers. This past Sunday my checking account is showing some fraudulent actives and I did not have this problem until my iPhone was stolen. I need help with getting this person as of now my private information is in jeopardy.

Please advise. Thank you

Have you got kn touch with anyone yet? If so, how do I go about the same thing?

The assistant store manager John at i#1385 (Dover, DE) is a iracist and he needs to be dismissed.

To the buying public,
Just a warning. You may want to steer clear of Food Lion. My mother purchased a
Smithfield ham only to get home, open it & find it covered in maggots!!! this was the
3rd ham she has returned for being rotten but the 1st with maggots!!! Food Lion & Smithfield don’t care but maybe the buying public will. This happened in a small town
Loris, SC but it makes me question all of their stores as the same procedures are being
followed in each location. They have surely lost 2 customers but rest assured, they don’t
give a rip!!!

My husband was given a dollar with a racial slur written on it in bold black marker the last time we patronized your store. It was store # 1441 and our cashier was Jill. When I called the store to inform them of the situation, of course it was Jill that answered the phone. I let her know what happened and that I would inform headquarters as well as the BBB. Defaced bills shouldn’t be accepted as payment, or if they are, they most certainly shouldn’t be given out as change — but taken out of circulation altogether. My husband burned the offensive bill the moment we got home, so it would never be seen by another human being. If you will please send out a memo, perhaps such occurances shall cease in the future. I attempted to email Customer Relations, but the required field ‘Select State’ seems to be frozen, rendering the message unable to send. Thank you for your consideration and assistance.

Brittany February 7, 2017 at 8:13 pm

You do know that it is illegal to burn money in the U.S right? You just admitted to your husband committing a federal crime.

norwood teachey July 14, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Your prices on cleaning tools (mops, brooms, brushes, bucket, dustpans, scour/sponges) are way too high-expensive for low quality (made in China) items from Butler and Mr, Clean brands. You really need to consider your own brands (private label) for this category as brands don’t mean very much for mops-brooms as value is the key play = at much better values (quality and retail price) for this category. You are getting crushed by Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Target and others as their retail costs for similar items w/ better quality are much more competitive and in many cases, less than 1/2 the retail cost you are asking + w/ better quality.
The entire retail business has changed since the recession and consumers demand value for all areas/categories. Food Lion is stuck in the past for this key area (cleaning tools). My company (ACS-Reynera) can help you as we are the largest & best PL-store brand cleaning tool supplier for retailers in the USA. I have helped create value for this category for 25 years so perhaps I can help you as well. Cheers, Norwood Teachey

After reading ALL the long winded complaints, very FEW complements, I’m going to make mine SHORT an SWEET. You have NO right to coin the phrase ” HOME TOWN PROUD” you don’t give a rats ass about ANYONE’S home town. I am trying to raise money for a young family uninsured with lupus and the woman is dying. She has lived in this town (ELGIN,S.C) all her life, and you would not allow a small 8×10 poster to hang on your flipping door stating a” fund raiser” yard sale. Lost business in ELGIN S.C. Food Lion, if you can’t give back to YOUR community, WE don’t need you here….IGA, allowed the sign AND donated HOT DOGS,BUNS AND DRINKS for the sale.

cathy hooper June 21, 2014 at 9:42 am

One correction on my last post. It was 3 sides…not 2.

cathy hooper June 21, 2014 at 9:39 am

As a loyal food lion shopper, I must commend you on a GREAT offer you had during the last holiday season, in hopes to see it offered again this year. Last Thanksgiving, you had a fantastic deal of which you purchased a ready to cook Jennie o turkey, 2 sides, dessert and rolls for 29.00. My husband and I are on such a tight budget that we cannot afford the BIG holiday grocery shopping. This was absolutely perfect. It was all we could afford. It really felt like Thanksgiving to us. We were SO hoping you would do the same at Christmas. I SINCERELY hope that you will not only do this same meal deal at the same price this 2014 Thanksgiving but, that you will offer it at Christmas as well for those of us who are on tight budgets. Thank you so much for you consideration in this request.

Really wish you would reconsider the closing of oak ridge tn store, maybe you should consider things like the people! You know, one of your three main goals! And how about the comunity and its people. The big ass ugly empty store remains of a once beneficial business! Oh the comunity! another of your three main goals! Sorry for the sarcasm but please reconsider this bad decision. Keep this store open!!!!

Chris Nantz May 21, 2014 at 10:31 pm

I shop in the FoodLion store on Bost Rd and N. Green St. in Morganton. I like that you have redone the produce section. I like the employees in that store they have all been friendly, courteous and helpful. With Ingles building bigger and having more gourmet food choices I find myself shopping there more often. The are rumors that WalMart is going to build a new grocery store across from your store. Suggestions to help keep your store competive: 1) expand your store to where the Dollar General was so you have more room to expand your bakery and deli section. 2) increase your selection of “yuppie”/gourmet foods. 3) increase your selecetion of international foods, speciality foods, special diet foods such as gulten free. Your meat department is ok; but, you can do better. Right now your store is geared to the lower income which is ok; but I think you can offer your prices, items, and upgrade also.

Food Lion launches ‘Easy, fresh affordable’ strategy

I think the strategy is flawed if you want to attract new customers lower the prices to compete with other supermarkets like Shoprite,Pathmark the meat prices are well above average like sirlion steaks at 8.99 lb and the cheapest ground meat at 3.99 lb even at those prices you have to buy a large quantity, I usually avoid the meat department due the high prices.

May 14, 2014Jon Springer
Food Lion on Wednesday formally announced plans to adopt the “easy, fresh and affordable” strategy chainwide, and unveiled an updated logo to signal the coming changes.
As reported previously in SN, Food Lion is undertaking the change in an effort to win more of its shoppers’ overall food spend, and build upon sales momentum resulting from recently completed round of price and service investments.

Food Lion’s new logo
The Saisbury, N.C.-based chain, a division of Begian retailer Delhaize , also identified 29 stores in the Wilmington, N.C., area where renovations are underway that will transform them after a concept store in Concord, N.C., that opened late last year. That store debuted a new checkout area, a “garden cooler” for fresh produce and other changes. Delhaize officials have said that 77 renovations would be completed this year.

Follow @SN_News for updates throughout the day.

The stores in Wilmington will be among the first to display a Food Lion logo that has been updated to signal “a more modern look” Food Lion president Beth Newlands Campbell said. The logo will go onto a line of private-label groceries to be rolled out later this year.
“With our new logo, we have an opportunity to show our customers that we’re fresh, while remaining true to our legacy of low prices,” Newlands Campbell said in a statement. “Beginning later this year, we’ll also bring our customers items in our stores that are consistent with the logo on the front, as we deliver new Food Lion store brand products that will help our customers save.”
Price investments fuel Q1 gains at Delhaize
Delhaize revamps store brands
Other elements of the new strategy are already underway, including an associate training program to be completed next month. The initiative is based on improved convenience, product quality and prices, supported by consumer-centric positioning and associate training.
“For our customers to trust us, they need to be able to go into any Food Lion store and have a consistently great experience,” Newlands Campbell said. “This is why our efforts to improve customer service and ensure our products are always fresh are so important. We want our customers to know that they can count on their local Food Lion team to meet their needs and serve their local community.”

ANGELA ADAMS May 8, 2014 at 9:50 am

Unfortunately, Identity Theft is a large problem in the country today. But, your organization is one of the biggest promoters of this problem. My wallet was stolen on February 03, 2014. On February 04, my debit card was used in your Columbia, SC store. When the police viewed the tape, a male made the transaction although the card clearly reflected a female’s name. And, on the signature strip it clearly says, ‘request I.D’. I write it on the back of all my credit cards. Nonetheless, I immediately cancel my checking account and cancel my credit cards.
Well, last Saturday I receive a returned check notice from another grocery store chain. Surely, there must be a mistake because I have not written any checks. I contact the investigator assigned to the case in February to alert him that someone is writing checks from the closed account. Next, I go to the bank to alert them of the same. The bank informs me that checks were written to Bi-Lo and Food Lion. So, I contact the corporate office of Bi-Lo, fax them the police information from February and file a police report in the jurisdiction of the Bi-Lo store. They will notify their check collection organization. No problem!
Well, I call your corporate office to alert them of the same. I encounter an individual that tells me there is nothing that she can do to assist me. Then….I’m furious! And, I’m told to contact Telecheck and handle the issue. When I ask her why they did not request an I.D., RESPONSE, “we don’t ask for I.D’s”. REALLY! I would love to email someone a copy of the recorded conversation. Your representatives created the mess by not asking for an I.D. but I have to fix the problem. Debit card, maybe, but for a check, absolutely.
First and foremost, Food Lion cleary did not request an I.D. from the person they allowed to write my check. And, now I have to spend my time trying to fix the problem. Unbelievable! You are going to loose loyal customer’s like Target Stores by not protecting your customer. And, you are inviting thieves to steal. Now you have an un-necessary loss of over $600.00 and angry customer that will tell any one who will listen about this story. Be careful, you could be next!

tommy March 29, 2014 at 4:24 pm

I have been a Food Lion customer for over 33 years. I have homes in Ga., Nc & Fl. I have lived mainly in Waxhaw Nc for the last 12 years and used the Food Lion in Indian Land Sc all this time. Harris Teeter moved in and now Publix but I remained a Food Lion customer. I got to know everyone there and this is more important than I think your new CEO understands. I picked this store over the closer Food Lion in Waxhaw not because the people at Waxhaw store were not as nice but they gave my daughters cookies. This may not sound like much but if you have kids then you will understand. The last couple of months I saw first my produce guy left. Then the manager, the great lady in the deli and now all have been moved. I was told that they changed their rule about giving cookies but the deli lady would give my daughters cookies everytime. This small act of kindness was what made Food Lion different and better than the others. Sure the others have cookies that you get yourself but not someone who takes a little time to make a child feel special. Today was my last day as a Food Lion customer. The deli lady was gone and I was told by the manager that this was the last store that gave cookies but should not have been doing so. I explained how I had been a customer for over 30 years and showed her my Food Lion card to prove it. I told her my story and the changes they had made that I did not like but she did not care. She told me they had to stop giving cookies because of kids with alergies. I said then why does Harris Teeter & Publix still give them. It is not about a cookie, it’s about loyal customers like me that have kept Food Lions open. Harris Teeter & Publix are nicer, newer & have more variety. Whoever or whatever is going on with Food Lions upper management is going to drive them out of buisness. You can’t stop the big guys from moving in on you and you will loose some customers when they do but what you should never do is run off your true loyal customers like me and others I have met while shopping there. Mark my words, whoever is in charge of these changes is going to put you out of business. I will not shop at any Food Lion until these changes are reversed. Its not about prices, sales or how fancy the place is. It is about the people, how they treat you, call you by name, stop to ask about you and your family. This is what Food Lion used to be and what made it special. If you want to be like the big guys then good luck. No one wants the copy cat, they would rather have the original and someone has killed that at Food Lion.

Dick Streno March 16, 2014 at 12:48 pm

I have been a consistent and loyal Food Lion shopper for 19 years. When I retired and moved to Knightdale I began shopping at the Food Lion there. Shopping there was comfortable and over time I built up strong relationships with the associates. It was a fun and comfortable place to shop. About 4 or 5 years ago the long time manager left and the mood of the employees began to change. Soon employees that I respected began to leave of transfer to other stores. Those that stayed seemed to become very sullen and distant. To put it bluntly the store became not a fun place to shop anymore. There have been it seems a huge turnover in management. While shopping for a few things this morning, what I will presume as the manager was talking to what I will also presume was a store manager in training. He very loudly exclaimed to his trainee, “I tell them once and if the don’t get it, you get rid of them” I had been in management for over forty years for a very large and successful company, never once had I said that to any of my managers nor did I hear that statement from any I ever reported to. After listening to a few more minutes of “wisdom” from this manager, I left. I now understand the change in attitude of those who stayed and understand why the others left. This also explains why whenever I come to this store there are so many new unhappy faces. I don’t plan on spending any more money or time at the Knightdale Food Lion. The Lowe’s Food down the street although more expensive, has folks that smile and greet you when you enter, and treat you as though you mean something to them. Nineteen years is a lot of time and also a lot of money spent. I am sure me leaving won’t hurt the overall profitability of that store, but if I am leaving after nineteen years, how many others have already left or are contemplating to leave. In the end it all adds up.

Christie Osborne March 3, 2014 at 11:31 am

I have been a loyal Food Lion customer for years. I feel the need to tell you about one of your employees in the Southern Pines, NC branch. Her name is Shana and she is an absolutely wonderful young woman. She is always so helpful, is always there working hard and always smiles at the customers. I shop regularly there and do so because of employees like Shana. I would like her to be recognized from Head Office and have her named employee of the month.

Why have we seen so few D’Anjou pears in your stores. You push the Bartlett pears like they are the tops in the pear hierarchy. Bartlett bruise easy, get over ripe and mushy very fast. Get real, sell us fruit that keeps well, not the one best for your bottom line.
Thank you
